Epic Business Intelligence Application Specialist / Cogito Certified

UTHealth is looking for an Epic Business Intelligence Application Specialist who is certified in Cogito or, at the very least, understands the fundamentals of this module.  It deals with analytics and business intelligence. This employee will be responsible for the ongoing design, build, testing, validation, and support of any and all assigned modules across the healthcare system. Works with operational stakeholders and IT technical staff to troubleshoot Epic system issues and problems, capture requirements for new initiatives, and aid in the planning and execution of project plans. Works with end users to help communicate improvements needed for business processes and contribute directly to the success of the UTHealth mission from a technological, clinical, administrative, and financial perspective.  

We prefer candidates with certification in Cogito and who have completed the course COG170. It will be an extremely long learning curve for individuals who have not learned the fundamentals of this part of Epic.   If you are familiar with Radar, Reporting Workbench, SlicerDicer, their Analytics Catalog, and all their data warehouses, Clarity, Caboodle, and Chronicles, we would love to talk with you.  

This role will primarily be remote, but team members are required to come on-site periodically for in-person meetings.  Applicants must either reside in or be willing to relocate to the state of Texas.

Position Summary:

Responsible for overseeing and coordinating the triage of analytics requests and deciding which reporting tools to use as new data needs arise, including but not limited to: Clarity and Caboodle reports; Extract Framework: Metrics; Benchmarking; Radar; Analytics Catalog; Registry Framework; data marts; Reporting Workbench; SlicerDicer and Tableau. Works closely with all levels of staff and customers to translate business needs into requirements, key performance indicators, design specifications, and implementation plans to meet the needs of UTHealth Houston.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Maintains expertise and seeks additional knowledge in the support and optimization of Epic Cogito analytics suite of tools, and how they integrate with other applications.
  • Establishing processes, including request, triage, prioritization, testing, publishing, and validating data requests.
  • Works cohesively with stakeholders to provide system support including analysis, build, and testing of requested changes, and analysis of new functionality of applications.
  • Reviewing upgrade documentation related to analytics tools and content and determining how to implement, disseminate, and train system-users.
  • Creates and modifies existing reports and distributes analytics content to data consumers.
  • Demonstrates timely, effective, and efficient troubleshooting of software and workflow issues and defines mitigation plans for resolution with minimal guidance.
  • Maintaining the Analytics Catalog and associated metadata records.
  • Meets build deadlines as communicated by EHR Business Intelligence Application Manager.
  • Develops and maintains system documentation to enable ongoing support and maintenance of the Epic system.
  • Assists EHR Business Intelligence Application Manager in developing build timelines and project plans as communicated by leadership.
  • Performs unit testing of application configurations and builds in appropriate non-production environments, to identify defects and create resolution plans accordingly.
  • Performs testing in a structured manner, follows any defined test scripts, and documents results.
  • Performs unit testing of application configurations and builds in appropriate non-production environments, and identifies issues and potential solutions.
  • Follows established guidelines for system change control.
  • Creates and maintains documentation for change management including cost estimation, project documentation, communication, and training plans.
  • Collaborates across teams to ensure process design, interface development, testing, and end-user training are performed to quality standards.
  • Independently performs basic project management activities for the development and implementation of system changes and small to medium projects.
  • Develops applications-specific reports; provides technical specifications and assistance to report developers as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Certification/Skills:

    • Superior communication skills, both oral and written, including specific skills of presentation and effective communication of complex subjects to non-technical groups.
    • Superior customer relation skills, including leading and participating in group sessions and reaching consensus.
    • Familiarity with project lifecycle and project management methodologies for software management.
    • Ability to plan and manage projects of various sizes, their tasks, dependencies, team members, other resources, and timelines.
    • Possess the analytical skills to collect information from diverse sources, apply professional principles in performing various analyses, and summarize the information and data to solve problems or design related systems and programs that cross department/divisional lines.
    • Active Epic certification in at least one Epic module.

    Minimum Education:

    Bachelor's degree in computer science, business, or a related discipline, or related experience in lieu of degree.

    Minimum Experience:

    Four (4) years of experience in a healthcare-related field is required. One (1) year of experience supporting one or more Epic modules is preferred. Large-scale healthcare systems planning and implementation experience on application software products preferred.

    Physical Requirements:

    Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
