Description
*Applications may be reviewed on a rolling-basis and this posting could close before the deadline. Click here for information about the selection process. EPA Office/Lab and Location: A research opportunity is available at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Office of Research and Development (ORD), Center for Public Health Environmental Assessment (CPHEA), Public Health and Environmental Systems Division (PHESD), Environmental Pathways Modeling Branch located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. Research Project: Limited data are currently available on the potential disparate exposures and health impacts of hazardous waste sites on people with disabilities in and around their neighborhoods. Concerns have been recently raised that people with disabilities may face greater impacts from exposures to hazardous waste sites when compared to other people living in the same communities. Under the guidance of a mentor, the research participant may be involved in the following planned activities: 1. Mapping and examining the potential exposures or health risks of people with and without disabilities residing in U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) facilities near (< 1 mile) hazardous waste sites (i.e., Superfund sites, industrial facilities, landfills, mines etc). This analysis may also include stratification by demographic factors (e.g., race, age, sex, and income-status) and/or type of disability. 2. Mapping and examining the potential exposures or health risks of children (ages 5-18 years old) with and without disabilities attending schools near (< 1 mile) hazardous waste sites (i.e., Superfund sites, industrial facilities, landfills, mines etc.). This analysis may also include stratification by demographic factors (e.g., race, age, sex, and income status), school level (elementary, junior high, and high school), and/or type of disability. Publicly available databases or EPA developed databases shall be used to perform the above mentioned data analyses. Learning Objectives: This research training opportunity shall provide this research participant with experience in 1) interacting with a multidisciplinary team of scientists on this above research topic, 2) developing innovative methods to quantify the exposures and health risks for people with disabilities residing in facilities or attending schools near specific hazardous waste sites, and 3) presenting these data and results at scientific meetings (i.e., conferences and workshops). Mentor(s): The mentor(s) for this opportunity is Jeremey Schroeder ([email protected]) and co-mentor Marsha Morgan ([email protected]). If you have questions about the nature of the research please contact the mentor(s). Anticipated Appointment Start Date: September 1, 2023. All start dates are flexible and vary depending on numerous factors. Click here for detailed information about start dates. Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year and may be renewed upon EPA recommendation and subject to availability of funding. Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time. Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. A travel/training allowance will be provided to the candidate to present project-related research data and results at scientific meetings (e.g., conferences and workshops). Click here for detailed information about full-time stipends. EPA Security Clearance: Completion of a successful background investigation by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is required for an applicant to be on-boarded at EPA. ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA. Participants do not become employees of EPA, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. ORISE offers all ORISE EPA graduate students and Postdocs a free 5 year membership to the National Postdoctoral Association (NPA). The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination). Questions: Please see the FAQ section of our website. After reading, if you have additional questions about the application process please email [email protected] and include the reference code for this opportunity.
Qualifications
The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Public Health, Epidemiology, Occupational Health, Environmental Health, Biostatistics), or be currently pursuing a master's or doctoral degree. Most recent degree must have been received within five years of the anticipated appointment start date. Preferred skills: The preferred skills for this research candidate would be proficiency in GIS mapping and working with large datasets and having excellent oral and written communication skills.
