This position provides for work-life balance with typically a 40-hours work week that includes flexible work arrangements. The current schedule requires the employee to work on the UT Austin campus four days per week.

Purpose

To provide professional knowledge and expertise in the operation and support of environmental programs in compliance with regulatory agency guidelines and institutional policies.


Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections, monitoring, training, and testing of various sites to ensure compliance with the permit requirements of the university’s storm water, wastewater, SPCC, PSTs/USTs and other environmental programs. Inspection frequency is determined by the senior staff and in accordance with permit requirements. Attend seminars and workshops to gain and maintain knowledge for environmental programs. Conduct/present environmental training for institutional employees and students.
  • Assume a lead role in providing support and expertise to construction project teams regarding environmental programs and regulatory requirements to ensure the projects meet all environmental requirements. Attend construction progress meetings and communicate frequently and effectively with EHS staff and project teams. Reviews design documents for compliance with environmental requirements and provide comments and feedback. Review, provide comments, and approve construction Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans as needed. Coordinate with environmental programs manager and team members to provide environmental compliance services to construction projects.
  • Maintain program compliance reporting systems identifying and developing both corrective action and appropriate training for areas found to be deficient. Communicate effectively and in a timely manner with stakeholders across UT Austin main campus and satellite locations in order to maintain compliance.
    Document corrective actions as needed. Assist in the development of standard operating procedures and other written guidelines.
  • Collect environmental samples for wastewater and storm water as required. Test, inspect and calibrate equipment as needed. Review and perform quality control of analytical results. Assist in the preparation of reports as required by permits and determined by senior staff.
  • Respond to environmental complaints and problems including hazardous and on-hazardous spills, odors and contamination. Analyze cause of incidents and impacts to environment, personnel and facility safety and report findings to management. Lead responder for environmental incidents at construction sites, including hazardous and non-hazardous spills. Drive University vehicles. Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy: UTS157 Section 2.5.4.
  • Assist in the scheduling and monitoring of services for pretreatment devices and disposal of nonhazardous waste streams, including grease, grit, mud, and oil-water units. Ensure waste profiles are current. Inspect pre-treatment units as needed.


Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in environmental science, engineering, a natural science, industrial hygiene, or a related field. Class "C" Driver License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident. Candidate must have at least 2 years of experience with a Bachelor's degree or a Master's degree. Candidates must possess working experience with the following competencies: accuracy and attention to detail, effective communication, initiative, interpersonal relationships, problem solving and service excellence. Candidates must possess a basic understanding of critical thinking and decision making.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.


Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in environmental science, engineering, a natural science, industrial hygiene, or a related field. Certified in HAZWOPER training. Experience working with waste water permits. Familiarity with Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC). Familiarity with TCEQ permits.


Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three-year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.


Salary Range

$56,000
