Recognize, evaluate and control environmental stresses or chemical, physical, biological and ergonomic factors that may impair the safety of students, faculty, patients and staff of the University.

• Ensure that all functions of the University have knowledge of University safety rules, and city, state and federal regulations and standards pertaining to health and safety.
• Conduct routine and unscheduled inspections to receive and investigate complaints and to review recorded instances of injury.
• Evaluate areas that have potential health hazards, determine samples to be tested and collect and submit samples to an appropriate laboratory for analysis.
• Review and analyze lab results of materials and initiate remedial action.
• Assist in developing and initiating programs to prevent injury or exposure to health hazards in the university community and demonstrate the proper use of machinery and protective equipment.
• Maintain effective relationship within the university system and with regulatory agencies to keep abreast of trends in the occupational health and safety field.
• Provide emergency response on a rotating 24-hour on-call basis.
• May provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.). 
• Perform related duties based on departmental need. This job description can be changed at any time.

• Bachelor’s Degree must be in Industrial Hygiene, Physical Science or Chemistry.
• Six (6) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Two (2) years of work experience in environmental health or related field.

• Outdoor Environment: Employees work outdoors and may not be protected from weather conditions.
• Noise: There is sufficient noise to cause you to shout in order to be heard above the noise level.
• Hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts of machinery or tools used to perform work, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals.
• Oils: There is air or skin exposure to POLS (Petroleum, Oil and Lubricants) or other cutting fluids.
• Atmospheric Conditions: Conditions that affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.
• Close Quarters: Employees are frequently required to work in crawl spaces, shafts, manholes, sewage and water line pipes, and other areas that could cause claustrophobia.
