Required Education and Experience:

  • Associate's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Two years of work experience in safety and health field.

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid State of Texas driver license or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire. Failure to obtain a valid TDL may result in termination.

Other Requirements or Other Factors:

  • Ability to tolerate moderate exposure to extreme temperature, dust, dirt, fumes, smoke, loud noises and chemical substances

  • Must wear personal protective equipment including respirator, protective clothing

  • Ability to demonstrate application of relevant codes and standards within 6 months of employment through certification, testing, field work, or other means determined by functional area

  • Ability to obtain a commercial drivers license (Class C, H Endorsement) within 6 months of employment. Ability to pass a pre-employment physical for DOT and HazMat (Which includes a pulmonary function test

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Associate degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • More than two years of work experience in safety and health field.

  • Experience with MS Office.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of environmental, safety, and health rules, regulations, and standards.

  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Requires ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

  • Ability to work independently.

Responsibilities:

  • HAZARDOUS WASTE - Segregates hazardous waste by hazard class, stamps pick-up date onto the disposal tag and puts the chemical waste onto the appropriate storage bin; makes sure all waste disposal tags are properly marked, entered into the hazardous waste tracking computer and ensure all records are up-to-date and accurate.

  • CONSOLIDATE WASTE - Assist in combining chemical waste from smaller sized containers into larger shippable containers. Makes sure all 55 gallon drums in the container area are properly labeled, numbered, logged in, and are shippable containers.

  • SCHEDULED PICK UP SITES - Drives chemical waste van to scheduled pick-up sites around campus, and picks up hazardous waste from these sites and transports the waste to the Central Hazardous Waste Storage area for storage.

  • REPORTS - Generates applicable reports and recommendations regarding safety conditions; performs safety inspections of buildings, facilities, and equipment; evaluates work practices to identify unsafe procedures.

  • WASTE TAGS - Review entries entered into Dakota, the online tracking system. Segregates stops for ease of scheduling chemical waste pick-up. Provides verbal and written interpretation of Federal and State regulations and TAMU programs to the multinational faculty, staff, and students.

  • EMERGENCY RESPONSE - Assists in chemical spill response. Helps clean up chemical spills in labs and buildings, both on and off campus locations.

  • WORKPLACE MONITORING - Performs work place monitoring to assess environmental conditions; uses sampling or detection equipment as necessary.

  • INSPECTIONS - Routinely conducts and documents inspections, corrects deficiencies and maintains Hazardous Waste Facilities and equipment. Performs other duties as assigned.
