The Environmental Engineer will have an opportunity to lead and execute a wide range of environmental and civil engineering tasks, including permitting and support of the campus energy generation and distribution systems, stormwater permitting, potable water systems, campus stormwater infrastructure, and transportation infrastructure. Depending on skills and interest, the successful candidate will also have the opportunity to operate an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle to evaluate campus infrastructure, operate GPS linked survey equipment, and take on sustainable design and construction tasks.

This position will serve as a leading technical resource in environmental engineering services. Responsibilities include the following:

  • Provide engineering services, including environmental permitting, energy systems permitting, stormwater, and civil design and calculations for campus buildings and utility systems. Provide project feasibility analyses and design and construction cost estimates and provide standard construction administration and inspection services for designed systems. Evaluate proposed project environmental impact and regulatory permitting requirements and demonstrate compliance approach with campus stakeholders, municipal approval bodies, and regulatory officials. Work as a team member with Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Architectural/Structural/Civil Engineering sections to deliver effective and efficient engineering services. Lead multidiscipline design efforts for environmental engineering projects. 

  • Manage engineering aspects of assigned capital projects through the coordination with university partners, coordination with university personnel, and the hiring and management of outside consultants and contractors; conduct job meetings, review work progress for conformance with contract, recommend payments, and prepare status reports; document work within the university's eBuilder project management system. 

  • Collaborate with other university stakeholders in creating and updating university design and construction standards relating to environmental engineering and campus infrastructure and review the work of external consultants to ensure the appropriate incorporation of these standards. 

  • Independently perform analysis, prepare documentation, and coordinate compliance with environmental laws and permits with university stakeholders and regulatory officials.

  • Provide UAV flight and data analysis services and maintain and manage UAV equipment owned by Facilities Engineering. Maintain the Facilities Engineering UAV fleet, both from functionality and legally within the standards set by the FAA and Cornell Risk Management. This position maintains and verifies any airspace permits administered by the FAA, as well as the permits pertaining to UAV registration.

  • The level of responsibility and integrity for this position is high, given the sometimes-confidential nature of the data that is maintained and several of the analytical tasks carried out for a range of university departments.

We Require These Qualifications:  

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited program plus a minimum of three to five years of applicable professional experience in environmental engineering. 

  • Working knowledge and experience in application of the appropriate engineering codes and standards in the environmental discipline. 

  • Understanding of construction project design process and construction delivery. 

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective customer relationships. 

  • Ability to work within a collaborative work environment on multiple simultaneous projects and designs with varying scope and multiple stages of completion. 

  • Experience with a variety of business and technical computer programs (such as word processing, spreadsheet, computational, project management, facilities management software.)

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain customer confidence and trust. 

  • Dedication to excellent customer service is a must. 

  • Work assignments and roles change frequently; ability to be flexible is required. 

  • A desire to develop new skills and knowledge on a consistent basis is important to success and growth in this position. 

  • As a representative of the University on these topics, a personal enthusiasm in environmental management and sustainability and energy systems is essential.

  • Must have and maintain a valid NYS driver’s license.

  • Current licensure as an FAA Part 107 licensed UAV pilot or willingness to obtain licensure within 6 months of hiring. 

You Will Be a Top Candidate with Our Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Advanced engineering degree, five to seven years’ experience and/or a New York State Professional Engineer’s license, LEED accreditation, campus facilities experience, and experience with energy systems, potable water, stormwater, and wastewater systems regulatory permitting and projects. 

  • Cross-discipline experience providing civil engineering designs or design-related tasks is highly preferred. 

  • Experience operating GPS linked survey equipment and collection/documentation of survey and elevation data preferred.

  • Education or professional experience in university environmental management, energy systems engineering, and permitting. 

  • Experience in providing documentation for the preparation of grant applications with energy agencies including the NYS Energy Development Agency, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, and the US Department of Energy.
