Position Summary and Duties
Under the general supervision of the Director of Environmental Health and Safety, the Environmental Compliance Coordinator will assist with the implementation of environmental health, safety and compliance programs. Responsible for coordinating and managing the disposal of hazardous, universal, and electronic wastes. Performs routine environmental sampling and testing as needed. Assists in campus wide safety training programs, and responds as a member of the HAZMAT Emergency Response Team. This is a full time position scheduled to work Monday through Friday from 7:30am to 4pm.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Primary responsibilities an employee must perform, with or without reasonable accommodation:
Waste Management:
Collects and manages the various waste streams on campus that pertain to regulated hazardous waste. Labels waste for off-site shipment with proper DOT names, categories, and packing groups. Escorts third party vendor during lab packs, pickups and shipments to ensure regulatory disposal protocols and safety measures are followed. Maintains all records and documentation related to shipping waste. Completes and maintains training certification in DOT hazardous materials, RCRA and HAZWOPER 40 hr. operations.
Chemical Management and Reporting:
Assists the Academic Departments (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Fine Arts, Engineering) with maintaining the Chemical Hygiene Plan and performing Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) duties for the University. Assists the laboratory technicians with properly categorizing chemicals for handling, transportation, storage and disposal in accordance with federal and state regulations. Inputs inventory-tracking data into database and assists in producing reports as required for State MDE and Federal EPA compliance. Experience with biological and radiological waste materials a plus.
Safety Inspections:
Develops and performs safety inspection programs for 90-day and satellite accumulation areas, safety showers/eyewashes and chemical fume hoods. Conducts semi-annual laboratory inspections, and performs follow-up to ensure that corrective actions have been implemented.
Health and Safety:
Actively participates in Environmental Health and Safety department activities by attending departmental meetings, professional development programs, and participates in committees and campus activities relating to the position. Performs follow-up investigations related to employee injuries/workers compensation. Actively assists Director in the campus wide safety training program. Participates in the development of technical documents including EHS procedures, programs, and guidance documents. Routinely enters training records into records management system.
Emergency Response:
Serves as a member of the HAZMAT Emergency Response Team by participating and assisting in training, drills, annual medical surveillance requirements and annual respirator fit testing. Responds to spills and leaks as a member of the HAZMAT Emergency Response Team and assesses potential hazards, as needed. Initiates monitoring and laboratory analysis as required in emergencies. Assists with “on-call” duties after hours for troubles or issues with the fire system network, as well as environmental issues. Responds to emergency situations during or after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety/security concerns.
Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s of Science in Chemistry preferred, or Biology, Industrial Hygiene, Safety, Environmental Studies or related field.
Preferred Qualifications
DOT, Hazardous materials and HAZWOPER 40 hr. operations. Valid driver’s license with good driving record. Experience with biological and radiological waste materials a plus.
