DESCRIPTION

Kick It California, formally known as California Smokers' Helpline, is part of the UCSD Moore's Cancer Center and offers free evidence-based telephone coaching to help people quit using tobacco. Kick It California offers service in six languages--English, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, and Vietnamese. In addition, Kick It California conducts research in tobacco control through grant funding (NCI, CDC, CMS, TRDRP and others). At any given time, research projects are being developed, implemented, written-up and published. Kick It California is also responsible for evaluating the Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE) program and providing a restorative justice alternative to suspension program for students found using tobacco and/or cannabis at school.

Answers incoming calls to the program and places outgoing calls to program leads, following established procedures and protocol to assess needs of callers, transition to coaching and provide the best possible service. Learns to assist clients in developing and implementing effective strategies to quit smoking or other tobacco use. Provides education on cannabis and health effects as appropriate. Creates and sustains a supportive client-focused environment for the change of addictive behavior during the enrollment process. Gathers and records detailed and accurate information on clients. Maintains thorough and confidential records of all client interactions. Participates in various research studies, applying protocols and procedures appropriate to the subject populations. Fluent in English, or English and one of the following languages: Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, or Vietnamese.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Coursework or work experience in related area. Continuing education in related field.

  • Fluency in English OR English and at least one of the following: Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese, Mandarin or Cantonese.

  • Knowledge or experience in program content and objectives. Knowledge of how to deliver educational programs in a variety of settings. Demonstrated skill in communicating in a helpful, informative, and supportive manner on the phone, and in providing appropriate interventions based on accurate assessment to a diverse group of study participants.

  • Organizational skills to develop a project plan, monitor plans against established deadlines, and review and analyze results.

  • Basic effective reading, verbal, written communications and presentation skills to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

  • Ability to maintain positive interactions with others and work cooperatively.

  • Experience using business software systems in the completion of work assignments; i.e., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint.

  • Demonstrated skill in conducting detailed telephone interviews, and ability to simultaneously use online databases.

  • Ability to understand and follow research protocols, including determining subjects' eligibility to participate in studies, randomization procedures, and coding of data.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Background in counseling, psychology, or health-related field.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and Live Scan/Fingerprinting.

  • The hours will fluctuate between 0-16 hours per week depending on the needs of the department.

  • Weekends and some holidays may be required.


Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $43,800 - $71,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $20.98 - $34.29

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
