CalArts Extended Studies is a self-supporting unit within California Institute of the Arts, providing  educational opportunities for creative professionals and life-long learners. CalArts Extended Studies non-degree credit courses reflect the artistic and academic integrity of the degree curriculum at CalArts. Funding is generated through fees collected from a diverse and changing student population. Part-time instructor positions are on a course by course contracted basis.  The contract is for the duration of the set development and delivery periods only and is subject to sufficient enrolment.

Any candidate that is offered employment with CalArts must complete the Form I-9 in accordance with the law. On the form, an employee must attest to their employment authorization. The employee must also present their employer with acceptable documents as evidence of identity and employment authorization. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship

English for the Creative Arts

Course Description:
As a student at CalArts this fall, you will be speaking English constantly, in class and outside of class. You will work on group projects, participate in discussions and critiques with students and faculty, write essays and critical responses, and make presentations in English. English Skills for the Creative Arts will prepare you to engage in the community of student artists and experience learning at CalArts in a fuller and more rewarding fashion.

English for the Creative Arts begins online, with a course Monday to Friday, July 22 to August 2. The course continues on-campus from August 5 to August 29. Classes are scheduled in the morning and language studios are scheduled in the afternoon, Mondays through Thursdays. Field trips are scheduled on Fridays. Attendance on-campus is required from August 5 to August 30.

The course will introduce you to concepts, practices, and vocabulary in preparation for study in an interdisciplinary arts college, with particular focus on preparing you to meet the proficiency threshold necessary to enter their first-year courses successfully. You will practice language skills such as listening for key points in lectures, researching, analyzing, discussing examples of the visual and performing arts, and critical writing. You will also learn and use specialized vocabulary that is specific to each of the Schools at CalArts. You will experience American classroom culture, as you learn about conducting research, writing, using correct citations, and the presentation conventions of scholarly writing. 

The afternoon language studios build upon and supplement the classroom-based learning of the morning class. You will have the opportunity to further explore and practice your language skills in the context of the program you may be attending at CalArts. You will engage in independent and group artwork related to your creative practice. The emphasis in the language studio will be to help students prepare to join critique and conversation within their dedicated artistic field. Here students will have the opportunity to practice skills in smaller groups and meet individually with instructors, tutors, alumni, or students in their program of study.

The course includes field trips, cultural activities, and other outings on Fridays that will give you a chance to meet current CalArts students and get to know Santa Clarita and the Greater Los Angeles area.

WHO CAN APPLY

If you have been accepted to CalArts and your English language test scores are lower than CalArts’ English Proficiency Requirements then you may apply to the program. If you pass the program, you will fulfill CalArts’ English proficiency requirements for admission in the fall. 

If you are an accepted student who has met the full English Language Proficiency Admission Requirements and you want to take the course to improve your English skills, you are welcome to apply.

To be eligible for the program, you must first apply to CalArts, receive an offer of admission and accept the offer. Your English language test scores must be within the  discretionary range. 

Teaching Associate Position Information

Requirements

• Assist the ELL Instructor in delivering course materials and learning assessments 

• Utilize the Canvas Learning Management System as the course support platform 

• Collaborate with the ELL Instructor to deliver language studio labs

• Assist the ELL Instructor in evaluating student achievement of specific learning outcomes

• Respond to student questions and learning needs in a timely manner

• Participate in required meetings, orientations, and complete mandatory training programs

• Employ culturally competent and inclusive teaching methodologies in the classroom 

• a degree or comparable professional training in Fine Art, Education, Humanities, or Social Science

• TESL or equivalent certification, or experience providing writing and learning support services to non-native speakers of English

• experience working in a university delivering ELL programs to for students with diverse learning styles is an asset

• excellent academic and professional writing skills with knowledge of different writing genres and disciplines and a familiarity with both visual and performing arts writing genres a strong asset

• experience delivering and evaluating skills-building workshops for students

• excellent group facilitation and instructional skills

• a past or present visual and/or performing arts practice is an asset

• demonstrated ability to take initiative, excellent organizational and time management skills

Salary

Total compensation  is $6,000
