Job Summary
Under the direction of the Director of the Cleanroom Research Laboratory, the Engineering Technician will perform equipment preventative maintenance & repairs, equipment improvements, equipment upgrades, and equipment installation. The Engineering Technician will work with other cleanroom staff to support the daily operation and maintenance of the laboratory. The candidate will be responsible for supporting and troubleshooting instrument issues related to physical vapor deposition (PVD) systems such as e-beam and sputtering equipment and other semiconductor equipment as needed. The candidate will also be assisting in interactions with Students, Faculty, and Research Scientists to identify Cleanroom capability requirements to support ongoing and future research projects.
Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and one year related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • A.A.S. degree in Engineering, Trade, or other technical discipline and or related experience.
  • A minimum of four (4) years of experience in preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of semiconductor equipment.


Preferred Skills

  • Practical knowledge and application of electronics, mechanics, vacuum theory, math, and computers.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills and software programs.
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting techniques, ability to learn the operational concepts of systems, and how to perform diagnostic and troubleshooting techniques to solve more complex operational and system problems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, pneumatic diagrams, flow charts, and cause and effect diagrams.
  • Must be detail-oriented, have effective communication skills, self-motivated, self-starter, and can work independently and/or with a team.
  • Must be a problem solver as well as a decision-maker.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Take ownership and support operation and maintenance of various PVD systems such as e-beam metallization, sputtering tools for deposition of metals, semiconductor and dielectric films and other equipment as needed.
  • Perform equipment preventative maintenance & repairs, equipment upgrades, and equipment installation.
  • Improve equipment/system performance to achieve process requirements and eliminate repetitive downtime.
  • Monitor and analyze all related data to improve and maintain tool performance and address all tool-related issues.
  • Coordinate with suppliers/vendors for service and repairs the university facilities team as needed.
  • Train internal and external users on e-beam and sputtering equipment as needed.
  • Work with process engineers to establish SOPs.
  • Create instrument operation manual as needed to help users navigate complex instruments.
  • Assist in the start-up of new tools and other activities as needed to sustain the operation of the Cleanroom.
  • Adhere to, support, and implement policies set forth by the University safety and compliance team.
