Job Description

The Laboratory Technical Coordinator will serve as a leader for shop/facility staff, and will perform fabrication, maintenance, and repairs on objects made of various materials, including aluminum. Should have a general knowledge and ability to operate machining equipment and related precision tools. The candidate should be knowledgeable and skilled in disassembly, repair, and reassembly of machines and equipment such as pumps, electric motors, generators, steam heaters, boilers, turbines, valves, and air compressors.

The candidate will also maintain other machine and perform repair and maintenance work on hydraulic systems of some small heavy equipment. Will also perform welding work on tools and equipment; and occasionally operate woodworking machines such as hand saw, jointer, and planer in making wooden parts or objects needed in machine work. Will also perform some plumbing duties on the reactor cooling systems, and other reactor related systems.

The Laboratory Technical Coordinator will also work with engineering staff to assist with the design of experiments prior to fabrication and installation, and disassembly/disposal after completion. The position will include some work with radioactive materials, and occasional work in radiation environments in accordance with federal regulations.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintains, and repairs metal parts, tools, and equipment. Serves as leader and performs fabrication, maintenance, and repairs on metal objects through the operation of lathes, shapers, milling machines, drill presses, and related precision tools and equipment.

  • Utilizes skills in carpentry, such as hand saw, jointer and planer. Performs painting, general electrical work and plumbing.

  • Operates and repairs small heavy equipment, including forklifts and compactors.

  • Works with student workers and permanent staff to design, build, maintain, and upgrade reactor equipment, support system equipment, and experimental devices.

  • Assists with oversight of physical infrastructure projects from design to completion.

  • Contributes to laboratory design and load-out.

  • Evaluate and select appropriate equipment for various projects.

  • With appropriate training—working with some radioactive materials, and occasionally working in radiation environments.

  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Required Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science, other applicable field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Experience:

  • Three years of related experience in engineering.

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
