Job Summary: The Engineering Researcher II oversees engineering research projects and assumes responsibility for the day-to-day activity supporting project. Makes significant contributions to the planning and design of research and creative projects. Assists in short- and long-term planning and project goals. May assist with research and creative proposals and dissemination of project findings.


Additional Department Summary: Performs high level research with faculty in the Metallurgical & Materials Engineering (MTE) Department and in the Alabama Analytical Research Center (AARC). Performs research design, instrument and equipment acquisition and training of eligible users, data collection and analysis, and dissemination efforts. May collaborate with faculty, researchers, staff, and students from varied academic and research units across the University and external organizations.

Designs and conducts high-level research to address current and emergent research needs and opportunities specifically related to powder processing, additive manufacturing, mechanical testing, and analytical characterization of such materials using electron, ion, and X-ray methods. Develops proposals for external funding. Mentors other researchers, graduate, and undergraduate students. Provides assistance and training on processing equipment, testing, characterization, and data analysis methods with outcomes prepared for peer presentations and publications.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and four (4) years of engineering or closely related research experience; OR master's degree and two (2) years of engineering or closely related research experience; OR doctoral degree and some engineering or closely related research experience. Post-Baccalaureate degree is highly preferred (Master’s degree or higher).


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in materials science and engineering or closely related field and four (4) years of engineering or closely related research experience; OR master's degree in materials science and engineering or closely related field and two (2) years of engineering or closely related research experience; OR doctoral degree in materials science and engineering or closely related field and some engineering or closely related research experience.

Skills and Knowledge: Abilities in one or more of the following areas refractory alloy metallurgy, oxidation science, additive manufacturing, powder processing, and/or mechanical testing. Ability to apply qualitative and quantitative data analysis using analytical materials characterization methods using one or more methods that involves electrons, ions, and/or X-rays. Ability to participate in multi-faceted, interdisciplinary research and implementation. Working knowledge of emerging issues across materials processing including additive manufacturing, materials characterization methods, and mechanical property evaluation. Very good verbal and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal and presentation skills. Ability to handle multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously and meet schedules, deadlines, and constraints. Ability to build and leverage relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Ability to adapt to changing environment and adept at problem-solving.


Preferred Qualifications: PhD in materials science and engineering or closely related field and powder metallurgy, additive manufacturing, mechanical testing, and/or materials structural/chemical characterization experience. Academic and/or national laboratory and/or industrial research and development experience.
