Position Summary

The position will be supporting the Superconducting Cryogenic Design Team with Superconducting Magnet design, production, fabrication, and assembly. The position responsibilities are listed below.

Major Position Responsibilities

  • Serve as project leader and subject matter expert in reviewing design layouts, budgets, project documentation, construction, testing, modification of hardware and software and/or the installation of sub-systems [35%]
  • Present design solutions to stakeholders and convene design reviews to obtain stakeholder feedback and endorsement [35%]
  • Produce and document effective design solutions by developing concepts, performing engineering calculations and creating CAD designs/details [10%]
  • Perform calculations and analysis of complex data and provide engineering support for fabrication, assembly, and commissioning of technical equipment [10%]
  • Able to make presentation graphics of design and communicate what is needed to advance the design and start construction [10%]

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Physics; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in physics, electronics, mechanical and/or electrical drafting, fabrication techniques, heat transfer, cryogenics and computer systems; and may require experience in the use of CAD and/or related engineering systems, including file transfer; experience in the use of exotic metals, including knowledge of their properties, in the fabrication and assembly of sophisticated research equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Desired Qualifications
  • Mechanical Engineering degree with eight to ten years of experience
  • Experience with system-level detailing and checking mechanical drawings for production
  • Experience with SolidWorks and PDM Systems
  • Experience in the design, fabrication and complex assembly of superconducting equipment
  • Experience in fabrication techniques, cryogenic systems, installation and operations setup, electronics, mechanical and electronic drafting and computer systems
  • Ability to work with export controlled materials
