As part of Harvard College Library's science and engineering team, the Engineering Librarian supports the students, faculty and staff of the John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) building on the vibrant history of the Gordon McKay and Blue Hill Libraries.
The Engineering Librarian works proactively to improve STEM instruction and SEAS research efforts. Key activities include: participating in research, teaching, and learning; building strong relationships with faculty and staff; providing face-to-face and virtual research assistance; supporting students, faculty, and staff on emerging techniques for research; supporting a dynamic research environment that encourages inquiry, critical thinking, and creativity; managing collections; and supporting research data management needs. The Engineering Librarian will help support instructional design and delivery, scholarly communication, e-content (including e-books), and management of intellectual property and copyright.
Reporting to the Director of Science and Engineering Library Services, the Engineering Librarian will hold office hours in SEAS buildings, consult and present workshops onsite and in library spaces, and create a network of professional contacts throughout SEAS.
Research, Scholarship, and Outreach:
Provides expert research consultation and discovery services.
Applies subject knowledge to foster relationships with students and faculty.
Works with faculty, students and staff to develop scholarly resources.
Engages in outreach for areas including intellectual property, copyright and scholarly communication.
Develops and conducts workshops in Cabot Science Library, and prepares for future library spaces in the Allston Science and Engineering Complex.
Conducts outreach to students and faculty throughout SEAS.
Learning and Teaching:
Provides workshops to promote critical and effective use of information resources.
Provide research support through one-on-one consultations and topic-specific reference.
Works with faculty to identify and integrate appropriate scholarly resources in the curriculum, and manages course reserve materials.
Assists students in identifying scholarly resources for classes and research projects.
Creates and maintains library publications and instructional materials in both print and electronic formats including web pages and Canvas guides.
Scholarly Resources Management:
Develops high quality digital and print collections, managing collection budget of over $1M.
Consults with faculty regarding library resources.
Supports campus needs and helps build library capabilities for research data management.
Participates in ongoing collection assessment, management and fund monitoring.
Assists with internal collaboration and connects with colleagues in science librarianship
Maintains currency with library functions, resources, practices and procedures.
Participates in Harvard Library committees, working groups, meetings, and events.
Contributes to the profession through active participation in conferences and associations.
