Job Description

Position Summary

Washington University School of Law’s Interdisciplinary Environmental Clinic (law.wustl.edu/academics/clinical-education-program/interdisciplinary-environmental-clinic/ ) is seeking an Engineering and Science Fellow. This is a unique opportunity for recent top graduates to apply their science or engineering training and experience in a law and policy setting. The Engineering and Science Fellow will work with the clinic’s two attorneys and engineer, as well as interdisciplinary teams of students, representing non-profit organizations in environmental and community health cases and projects.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Engineering and Science Fellow will provide technical case oversight for a portion of clinic cases. Cases may involve air and/or water pollution issues and/or environmental justice. Responsibilities will include:

  • Develop in-depth knowledge of the technical issues associated with assigned cases.
  • Work simultaneously on several clinic cases and projects.
  • Supervise work of undergraduate students. 
  • Work with clients to understand and implement their case goals and priorities.
  • Direct and review technical research, assist students in synthesizing information for comment letters and other documents, and assist students in communicating with experts.
  • Support clinic faculty and students in developing and implementing case strategy.
  • Develop an awareness of the interrelationships among science, technology, law, and policy.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil, environmental or chemical engineering; environmental science, geology, biology, chemistry, or related field.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent academic record and references.
  • Strong quantitative analytical skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to deal with diverse student population.
  • Strong multi-tasking abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One to two years of experience with environmental projects in industry, consulting, public interest, or government, or a master’s degree in field.
  • Experience in environmental permitting, control technologies, or modeling.
  • Commitment to community service.
  • Previous teaching or mentoring experience.
  • Proficiency in GIS.

Working Conditions

This opportunity requires the availability for evening/weekend programs on occasion.

Salary Range

Base pay is commensurate with experience.
