The Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University was established in 1979 to conduct basic and applied research in robotics technologies relevant to industrial and societal tasks. Seeking to combine the practical and the theoretical, the Robotics Institute has diversified its efforts and approaches to robotics science while retaining its original goal of realizing the potential of the robotics field. The facility includes approximately 100,000 square feet at the main Pittsburgh campus, another 100,000 square feet at the National Robotics Engineering Center in Lawrenceville and growing.

Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute is searching for an Engineer II to join their team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the department by assisting in moderately complex engineering work requiring commonly employed technical knowledge related to the design, testing, installation and modification of equipment, or processes, or structures. Works with other engineering disciplines in the development and application of research or products

Responsibilities:

  • 20% Conduct research in robot autonomy, motion planning, and control.

  • 20% Serve as a team leader for communications team working on building search and rescue robots for subterranean environments.

  • 20% Test the developed robotic systems in fields and evaluate performance.

  • Develops, modifies and maintains operating protocols/procedures and related technical documentation.

  • Identifies operating or installation problems. Recommends design modifications and or new applications for equipment.

  • 40% Contribute to the research, design, development of robots including both unmanned aerial and ground vehicles components related to communications in the autonomy stack to be deployed on CMU's collection of robots. This collection of robots may include both unmanned aerial and ground vehicles.

  • In consultation with project managers and other researchers or engineers contributes to the technical design and development of components and equipment used in research and development.

  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Robotics and knowledge of research techniques or equivalent combination of training and experience.

  • Strong analytical skills

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Strong problem-solving and reasoning skills

  • Strong technical writing experience

  • 3-5 years of engineering design process experience

  • 3-5 years of engineering experience

Certifications:

  • PE - Professional Engineer License - National Society of Professional Engineers
