ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
The USF Institute for Applied Engineering (IAE) is a Florida not-for-profit corporation and USF Direct Support Organization organized to support and benefit the University of South Florida. POSITION SUMMARY:
The Engineer I collaborates with staff on development, design, fabrication, testing, documentation, and delivery of projects related to research and technology development. This position directly participates in research project design and analysis and new business development. This position may also lead a team including full-time staff, undergraduate, and graduate students through assigned project tasks while providing guidance and mentorship to the team and providing progress and status reports to project leadership. The Engineer I supports the IAE Rapid Experimentation Lab (REL), which is a cutting-edge facility designed to facilitate rapid prototyping and experimentation across various engineering domains including mechanical, electrical, RF, and software engineering. The Engineer I will oversee the operation and management of the facility to ensure engineers are able develop, integrate, and test components and systems across multiple engineering domains. This role requires a dynamic individual with a broad background in engineering, project management, and resource coordination to ensure the smooth functioning of the lab and support the innovation goals of the organization.

Familiarity with project management and coordination in a technical environment; Broad understanding of engineering and manufacturing processes (e g. Lean, 6-sigma, TQM); General understanding of mechanical, electrical, RF, and software engineering principles, with some hands-on experience in a prototyping and experimentation environment; Excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with cross-functional teams; Proficiency in lab equipment operation and maintenance; Familiarity with rapid prototyping tools and techniques, such as 3D printing, CNC machining, and circuit prototyping.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Collaborates on conceptual development, design, fabrication, testing, documentation, and delivery of projects related to research and technology development. Assists the Sr Research Engineer in leading a team of full-time staff, undergraduate and graduate students through assigned project tasks by providing guidance, mentorship, and resources to promote productive work.
Manage the day-to-day operations of the REL, ensuring optimal utilization of resources and adherence to safety protocols. Work with engineers and equipment subject matter experts to develop and training materials to educate LAB users on the capabilities of the rapid experimentation lab and best practices. Collaborate with engineering teams to schedule equipment and understand requirements and provide guidance on resources available in the lab.
Provide general project management and oversite, monitor project progress, identify bottlenecks, and provide timely support to ensure projects stay on track. Assist engineering projects by coordinating the procurement of materials, tools, and components necessary for project execution.
Interfaces with stakeholders external to USF under guidance of project leadership, including reporting on projects and deliverables and supporting customer activities. Acts as an advisor to stakeholders internal to USF, primarily other IAE staff and personnel, to help enact the IAE strategic plan and make optimal operational decisions related to delivering on projects and contracts.
Evaluate new technologies and tools to enhance the capabilities of the lab and support the organization's innovation objectives. Maintain an inventory of lab resources, including equipment, tools, and consumables, and track usage to inform procurement decisions.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physical or Biological Sciences
PREFERRED:
Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
Familiarity with project management and coordination in a technical environment.
Broad understanding of engineering and manufacturing processes (e g. Lean, 6-sigma, TQM).
General understanding of mechanical, electrical, RF, and software engineering principles, with some hands-on experience in a prototyping and experimentation environment.
