Job Description

The Engineer of Extreme Environment Testing will plan, develop, coordinate, and direct projects of varying scope. Carry out complex and novel assignments requiring the development of new and improved techniques and procedures, where work is expected to result in the development of new or refined equipment, materials, processes, projects and/or scientific methods.
Develop and evaluate plans and criteria for a variety of projects and activities to be carried out by others. Assess the feasibility and soundness of proposed processes and develop or adapt processes when necessary. Often performs in an advisory or consultant role to support users and customers of equipment associated with the essential duties.

Salary Range

$52,490 - $75,000 per year; DOE


Essential Duties

  • Plans and creates or monitors the design of engineered systems, components, or equipment. 
  • Coordinates with faculty researchers and/or other engineering personnel to define broad research objectives and ascertain the nature of complex research problems. 
  • Oversees the analysis or analyzes research problems, requirements, and objectives.
  • Organizes and manages the adaptation of engineering principles in the solution of problems for the development of new techniques, instrumentation and/or processes. 
  • Recommends design modifications or alterations as required. 
  • Coordinates operation, maintenance, and repair activities to maintain optimum utilization of equipment or system.
  • Monitors budget, and cost control for each project.
  • Provides training and oversight of ASU owned equipment, including its sourcing, purchasing, use tracking, and preventative maintenance.
  • Primary responsibilities associated with the scheduling and use of radiation sources and equipment, developing test platforms and plans, and the use of instruments for testing semiconductor material and devices, and circuits.
  • Travels to other radiation test facilities to carry out or assist in carrying out tests and material, device, and circuit radiation exposures.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field AND three (3) years of engineering or related experience; OR, seven (7) years of engineering or related experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and skill in applying, engineering principles and procedures.
  • Experience working with radioactive materials and radiation producing equipment
  • Good understanding of ionizing Radiation and associated physics concepts.
  • Experience carrying out radiation damage experiments and electronic materials testing.

Working Environment

  • Regular activities require ability to manage multiple tasks at one time, to be able to prioritize tasks; to manage conflict: to interact in a team environment: and to communicate effectively to exchange accurate information. 
  • Activities include office or laboratory work may require extended periods of being in stationary position.
  • Position works with hazardous agents.
  • Frequent moves up to 25 pounds for various needs.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. 
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties.
  • May be required to wear personal protective equipment before entering laboratories such as lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, closed toe shoes and respirator. 
  • Laboratory activities include work with radiation sources. Training for work in these environments will be provided.

Department Statement

This is a SWAP hub grant-funded position. The grant is currently funded for 5 years. The position's continuation beyond the grant's duration is contingent on funding availability.

Must be able to pass an FIB finger print based background check.
