What You Will Do

The Engineering Services TA-55 Division (ES-55) of Los Alamos National Laboratory develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. This position is within the Engineering Services TA-55 Division (ES-55) and is assigned to the Project Engineering Team. This group is responsible for implementing the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at Los Alamos National Laboratory’s TA-55 area. The positions are in support of the Laboratory nuclear and non-nuclear facilities located in and around the TA-55 area.

You will be working as part of a project team assessing, maintaining, and upgrading facility systems at TA-55. Specific tasks will include assisting in developing design documents, contract documents consisting, development and review of drawings and specifications. This position will require effectively communicating engineering solutions both verbally and in writing to management, customers, peers, subcontractors, and craft personnel.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Design experience in nuclear, accelerator or industrial facility operations.

  • Demonstrated basic knowledge of engineering principals, mathematics, and science to solve routine technical problems in support of discipline area.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical direction to design and drafting personnel in preparation of drawings.

  • Knowledge of engineering design processes and procedures, including industry codes and standards

  • Uses and applies principles, theories, concepts and techniques within discipline and of other related fields to perform work.

  • Resolves a wide range of issues in creative ways. Provides resolutions to a diverse range of complex problems where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.

  • Plans engineering assignments to include estimates for engineering staffing, quantities, scope reviews, schedules on a project. Has technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating these assignments.

  • Ability to manage external/ subcontracted design agencies, ensuring their compliance with application industry codes and standards.

  • Resolves field-initiated questions on engineering, visits jobsite, as required, for exchange of information.

  • Coordinates engineering effort with project manager, procurement, construction, startup, environment, safety, health, and project controls, when assigned.

  • Plans engineering assignments to include estimates for engineering staffing, quantities, scope reviews, schedules on a project. Has technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating these assignments.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ensures that technical risk assessments are comprehensive and complete, safety practices and procedures are implemented, and engineering design and corresponding design documentation are in compliance with project quality assurance plan and procedures

  • Excellent problem solving skills

  • Plans, forecasts and identifies necessary engineering resources to support project workload requirements. Coordinates activities among the design groups on the project.

  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and contract language

  • Common business operations software experience required (EI-MS Office Suite).

  • Functions as the Administrative Subcontracts Technical Manager (AdSTR), when required

  • Other duties as defined by the Project or Functional Manager.

  • Ability to communicate well, both written and verbally.

Education/Experience : Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experienced in producing designs utilizing AutoCAD tools and work processes.

  • Knowledge of DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering

  • principles and procedures.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2-Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
