Department Description

Energy Services is responsible for the provision and operation of utilities (electricity, steam, chilled water, water. stormwater and wastewater) serving the University community exceeding 30,000 individuals, made up of students, faculty and staff employees. Energy Services performs an array of services including, but not limited to the following: production of steam, chilled water and electricity, maintenance of all associated production systems and distribution systems and construction planning and estimating. Energy Services consists of five (5) groups: (1) Cogeneration Systems (generation of electricity and steam and the distribution of steam throughout the entire campus and UNG Hospitals); (2) Electric Distribution Systems (distribution of electrical power throughout the campus); (3) Chilled Water Systems (producing and distributing chilled water throughout campus); (4) Water, Wastewater and Stormwater (for the use and conservation of water, as well as the proper management of stormwater and runoff); and (5) Administration Staff. Together these systems supply the University with all the steam, electricity, chilled water and water utilities critical to its operations and comfort.

Position Description

This position serves as a crew leader for the Steam Distribution Systems group. It provides advanced level technical and mechanical expertise and low to intermediate level electrical experience to maintain a complex steam distribution system. The position serve as a technical expert on steam distribution piping, tunnels hardware equipment hot water systems, heat exchangers metering devices and components associated with condensate return pump systems, hot water circulating systems and their electric controls. These duties include understanding mechanical concepts, applications, equipment and applied techniques for critical welding application cutting and pipe fitting. Position provides leadership, guidance and instruction to other mechanics in steam distribution in correct troubleshooting analysis, repairs and both preventive and predictive maintenance practices of the systems and equipment. This position fills in as a supervisor as needed and provides assignments to the assigned crew. The position serves as a trainer to Junior mechanics with guidance on operations maintenance and repair of the steam distribution system. The position will ensure all work orders are entered correctly into MAXIMO, the computerized work management system.

Positions in this banded class supervise and manage a group of employees who perform a wide range of progressively responsible tasks involving the operations repair and maintenance of facilities producing chilled water, electricity and steam, as well as the associate chilled water electrical and steam distribution systems The function performed by the individuals supervised by employees in this banded class are operator, service inspection, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of equipment and systems associated with the various facilities. Work also involves modification to existing systems and the construction and installation of minor pieces of equipment. Equipment and systems worked on include coal­ fired steam plant boilers, steam turbines, generators, auxiliary equipment, chillers, high voltage electrical switches, DCS, SCADA and the associated chilled water electrical and steam distribution systems.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or equivalency and four years of experience in applicable Utility operations, of which one year is supervisory; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Requires certification(s).

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Demonstrated abilities of supervision with operations and/or maintenance repair personnel who operate and/or repair and maintain coal-fired boilers steam turbines. auxiliary equipment. chillers, high voltage switches, motors . pumps, electrical substations, control systems (DCS and/or SCADA), electrical protective systems, and campus chilled water, electrical and steam distribution systems. Candidates for this position may function in a “working supervisor” capacity. Demonstrated abilities to schedule and review work assignments; set daily objectives for work unit based on established priorities and time frames and determine the priority and extent of repair work to be completed. Work is differentiated from the other supervisory competency levels by the relative size and complexity.

Preferred Qualifications

Man-lift/snorkel boom operation certification.
Forklift operation certification.

Special Physical and Mental Requirements

The environmental conditions vary tremendously from an air conditioned and heated control room to dusty, hot, humid and cold conditions. This position will be required to work in all conditions at various lengths of time depending on the need or operational requirements.This position will be required to enter confined spaces or hazardous environments with the appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in accordance with the established procedures. PPE (required but not limited to, safety boots. hard hat, safety glasses, back harness. respirator use/SCBA and uniforms).
Physical effort required for the position includes, but not limited to: climbing ladders/stairs (regular part of the Job); working in confined spaces, being in contact with hazardous materials and lifting/moving up to 50 lbs. independently.
