Position Summary Information
The Energy Services Department consists of 5 groups: (1) Cogeneration Systems (co-generation of electricity and steam, and the distribution of steam throughout campus and UNC Hospitals; (2) Electric Distribution Systems (distribution of electrical power throughout campus); (3) Chilled Water Systems (production and distribution of chilled water throughout campus); (4) Water, Wastewater and Stormwater (for the use and conservation of water, as well as the proper management of stormwater and runoff); and (5) Administration Staff. Together these systems supply the University with all the steam, electricity, chilled water and water utilities critical to its operations and comfort.
Cogeneration Systems’ primary purpose is the generation and distribution of steam to the various buildings on the University campus and to UNC Hospitals. Steam is critical to the operation of the University and UNC Hospitals. It is used for heating, cooling, domestic hot water, sterilization of surgical instruments, distilled water production, food preparation and dish washing. Cogeneration Systems also generates electricity as a byproduct of the steam generation. It can presently supply about 30% of the peak campus electrical load.
There are 90 full and part time employees in Cogeneration Systems. The personnel are divided into engineering, operations, maintenance, instruments & controls, and a small administrative staff. The operation of the Cameron Avenue Cogeneration Facility and the Manning Drive Steam Plant are 24 hours/7 days a week/365 days a year. In order to ensure safe and reliable operation, maintenance and operations crews must be either on-site or on-call at all times.

The skill set level for this position allows it to assist the Shift Supervisor (SS), Control Room Operator (CRO) and Assistant Control Room Operator (ACRO) in the operation of all plant components, equipment and systems in complex steam and electric generating facilities, (Cogeneration Facility and Manning Drive Steam Plant) to ensure that they operate safely and reliably. This position assists the SS, CRO and ACRO in the operation of two circulating fluidized bed boilers, three natural gas/oil package boilers and all associated balance of plant auxiliary equipment at the Cogeneration Facility and Manning Drive Steam Plant. This position is responsible for the daily inspection of the operating equipment for proper valve alignment, lubrication and equipment operating condition detected at the actual equipment in the field. The auxiliary equipment consists of steam turbine generator, fans, pumps, piping systems, valves, control valves, tanks, mills, steam straps, cooling tower, condensers, fluid drives, heat exchangers, air compressors, water treatment systems, bag houses, fuel oil storage, etc. This requires an understanding of said systems, equipment and components. The operating practices will ensure safe, reliable and efficient operation of these multi-million dollar facilities. This position communicates with the appropriate personnel to ensure that all malfunctions are corrected in order to maintain continuous steam and electric service to the customers of the facilities. This is a highly skilled position in the Operations organization. This position assists in the facility security during non-business hours and weekends 24/7.
