Job Summary

Energy Engineer, under direction of the Energy Manager, assists in creating, developing, and implementing the institution’s Strategic Energy Plan and Climate Action Plan.  Performs ongoing commissioning of HVAC, lighting, and similar systems to ensure efficient operation.  Develops and oversees implementation of energy and carbon reduction projects.  Performs analyses to support funding requests for these projects.  Provides technical expertise to in-house staff on energy efficient operations and insfrastructure, as well as renewable and carbon-free energy use and procurement.

Department Description

The University of California San Francisco Medical Center operates 785 inpatient beds at Parnassus, Mission Bay, and Mt Zion and over 120 outpatient clinics at both those locations and throughout the city of San Francisco and the Bay Area. In total, the Medical Center employs about 15,000 FTE and currently occupies approximately 2.7 million square feet of space in its inpatient and outpatient facilities. Medical Center facilities consume various forms of energy from a variety of sources including a Campus-operated cogeneration power plant at Parnassus, a Medical Center operated power plant at both Mission Bay and Mt Zion, utilities systems within its buildings, and public utility systems.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, civil, or environmental engineering or equivalent experience/training.
  • 2 years of experience performing engineering work in mechanical, electrical, or controls engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working with building control technologies or energy information systems.
  • Experience performing mathematical engineering and thermodynamic calculations and experience conducting complex analytical utilities studies in a large-scale multi-facility, or complex facilities management environment.
  • Thorough knowledge of energy management-related initiatives and an understanding of impact to the organization of such initiatives.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of one or more of the following areas: natural gas, biomethane, carbon management, energy efficiency, direct access, and/or wholesale electric power.
  • Excellent communication and public speaking skills to effectively communicate complex utility information to diverse groups such as technical staff, departmental support staff, senior managers, leadership, and regulatory officials in a variety of forums.
  • Strong communication, organization, and project management skills. Experience working in a team environment and communicating effectively with a broad range of people, including diverse individuals and groups at all levels of an organization.
  • Ability to work effectively in a service-oriented environment with frequently changing priorities. Ability to multitask, prioritize workload, and meet multiple deadlines. Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proven experience querying data for analysis, ensuring data integrity, and logically analyzing complex information and data to develop clear and concise reports or recommendations for management.
  • Demonstrated experience with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED's) guidelines for new building construction, major renovation, and existing buildings.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic engineering knowledge and 2 to 5 years of associated with performing engineering work in mechanical, electrical, or controls engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT)
  • Active registration as U.S. Green Building Council accredited professional in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)
