Departmental Objective
Our core mission is to support the computing infrastructure that underpins the University’s information systems. We aim to assist customers throughout the campus community in leveraging these systems to their fullest potential. This includes providing technical assistance and guidance and developing and implementing new solutions to improve system efficiency and effectiveness. Our team works closely with stakeholders across the University to ensure that our services align with the community’s needs and contribute to the institution’s overall success.
Purpose of the Position
To provide technical support services that maintain and support Christopher Newport University’s technology infrastructure, with a primary focus on endpoint computing. This position provides high quality technical and customer support to the CNU community across Windows, macOS, mobile devices, and associated peripherals.
The position works closely with Endpoint Administrators and other IT Services staff to support modern endpoint management, device provisioning, software deployment, configuration, security, and lifecycle processes. The position also develops and maintains technical documentation, standard operating procedures, and troubleshooting resources to support consistent and efficient service delivery.
Through direct customer support, proactive troubleshooting, process improvement, and collaboration with endpoint administrators, this position helps ensure University endpoint systems remain reliable, secure, efficiently managed, and responsive to the needs of the CNU community.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Related to Position
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Apple macOS operating systems, including installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of modern endpoint management concepts, including mobile device management, device provisioning, configuration profiles, application deployment, device compliance, and lifecycle management.
  • Familiarity with endpoint management platforms such as Microsoft Intune and Jamf Pro.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Entra authentication concepts, including Multi Factor Authentication, device registration, and common authentication troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with endpoint security concepts and security management tools such as Microsoft Defender for Endpoint.
  • Knowledge of software and hardware installation, configuration, troubleshooting, and repair.
  • Knowledge of basic networking concepts, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, wired and wireless connectivity, and common network troubleshooting techniques.
  • Familiarity with IT service management and ticketing systems.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Exceptional verbal and written customer service skills.
  • Ability to model high levels of professionalism, integrity, and appropriate workplace behavior.
  • Ability to effectively document technical work, troubleshooting procedures, and customer interactions.

Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification Required
Education:
  • High school graduate or equivalent education/experience that equates to a high school diploma.

Certification(s):
  • Jamf 100 certification or the ability to obtain Jamf 100 certification within six months of employment.

Experience:
  • Experience providing front line customer service, gathering information, diagnosing issues, or troubleshooting end user technology.
  • Experience installing, configuring, troubleshooting, or maintaining Microsoft Windows and/or Apple macOS operating systems.
  • Experience working with computer hardware, software applications, peripherals, or common endpoint technologies.
  • Experience working in a technology support, service desk, help desk, or similar customer focused technical environment.

Additional Consideration(s)
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, a related technical field, or equivalent relevant professional experience.

Certifications:
  • Apple, Jamf, Microsoft, CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, or other relevant information technology certifications.

Experience:
  • Experience working with IT service management or ticketing platforms such as HelpSpot or similar systems.
  • Experience using endpoint management tools such as Microsoft Intune, Jamf Pro, or comparable device management platforms.
  • Experience with managed application deployment and patching technologies such as Patch My PC or similar solutions.
  • Experience supporting endpoint security technologies such as Microsoft Defender for Endpoint.
  • Experience troubleshooting Microsoft Entra authentication, Multi Factor Authentication, device registration, or similar identity and access management technologies.
  • Experience with Apple management technologies and processes, including Apple School Manager, Automated Device Enrollment, Mobile Device Management, configuration profiles, macOS Recovery, or managed application deployment.
  • Familiarity with mobile devices and operating systems including iOS, iPadOS, and Android.
  • Experience supporting technology within a college or university environment.
  • Experience documenting technical procedures, standard operating procedures, or knowledge base information.
Salary Information Salary $47,288 to $59,110, Commensurate with Education and Experience
