Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Information Technology Division has an opening for an Endpoint Engineer to join the team.

 

In this exciting role, you will serve as the architect and technical lead for the Endpoint Management Team, which operates under the IT Support Services Group. The Endpoint Management Team provides services that include tools used to deploy and manage computing endpoints, patch operating systems and key applications, and monitor and enforce Berkeley Lab cybersecurity policies. In addition, this team works closely with the Workstation Support, Embedded Support, and Help Desk teams to provide infrastructure, automation, and data integration as needed to enable efficient, and excellent support services, and, finally, provides Tier 3 support and expertise to support Windows, Mac and Linux environments, as well as for the entire suite of Endpoint Management tools. The tools provided by this team are used to deploy, monitor, and manage the Lab’s fleet of nearly 10,000 desktops, laptops, and mobile devices running Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iOS, and Android systems, which enable the Lab’s Scientific and Operations objectives. 

 

What You Will Do:

  • Work with IT management to discover and document the business requirements of a broad set of stakeholders, and use this as a basis for developing a strategic vision for endpoint management services.
  • Evaluate new and existing endpoint management solutions to facilitate endpoint deployment, patch management, malware protection, software distribution, automated and remote support, and policy compliance for Windows, Mac, Linux, Chrome, and mobile endpoints.
  • Facilitate the selection and procurement of tools as needed to implement the endpoint management strategic plan.
  • Develop and execute project plans as needed to implement new endpoint management tools, including the installation, configuration, training, and migration from existing tools.
  • Oversee the ongoing maintenance, configuration, customization, and automation of endpoint management tools.
  • Develop applications, scripts, and utilities to collect, integrate, and report data from multiple systems.
  • Develop applications, scripts, and utilities to automate workstation support tasks, including workstation preparation, configuration, and management.
  • Provide Tier 3 support for colleagues and users related to automation and management systems, operating system issues, and other areas of expertise.
  • Collect and maintain reports about the current operational state of the fleet workstations in near-real time.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with performance targets for all essential services.
  • Lead and Participate in group meetings, peer group technical data exchange, and process improvement teams.
  • Provide day to day guidance for employees regarding technical work.
  • Develop and maintain supporting documentation, procedures, and workflows as needed.

 

What is Required:

  • Greater than 8 years’ experience in a customer service organization providing technical services, along with a Bachelors degree, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Ability to coordinate and direct activities within a group to meet project deadlines, service level commitments and resolve conflicting demands of users.
  • Ability to communicate complex information with understanding to a variety of audiences who have different levels of experience and knowledge.
  • Deep knowledge of endpoint management tool administration and automation such as Casper and BigFix.
  • Deep knowledge of web application development, particularly with Python, Ruby or PHP.
  • Deep knowledge of script and application development using C/C++/C#/Java/PowerShell.
  • Experience using Active Directory to create and deploy GPOs.
  • Experience providing technical support for workstation users.
  • Experience administering server systems in a production environment in both Windows and Linux.
  • Experience developing fixlets in the BigFix ActionScript language.
  • Experience managing security applications, such as antivirus, anti-malware, and PII detection.
  • Experience managing projects, including resource management, task scheduling, and reporting.
  • Experience with software packaging and deployment tools including MSI, apt, and PKG scripting.
  • Experience working in an IT Service Management environment (e.g. Service Now).

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience as a team or technical project lead is preferred.
  • Experience supporting research staff in an academic environment.
  • Experience executing software development projects following SDLP practices.
  • Experience defining business requirements.
  • Dell Certified Technician.
  • Apple Certified Technician.
  • CompTIA A+ Certification.
  • ITIL Foundations Certification.

  • This is a full-time, career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
