General Statement
The Department of Microbiology & Cell Biology at Montana State University (MSU) invites applications for an open-rank, tenure-track, endowed faculty position in livestock health (60% scholarship, 30% teaching, 10% service). Located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, Bozeman, Montana offers a healthy lifestyle and a world class research university that enthusiastically supports innovation and scholarship. This position is supported by a generous endowment made by the Johnson Family with the intention to attract top agriculture researchers that will continue a productive, nationally recognized, and externally funded research program. The focus area of this position is large animal livestock health (i.e., bovine, equine, ovine, swine). Livestock sales are a major contributor to the overall market value of agriculture sales in Montana, contributing $1.9 billion of the overall $3.5 billion in total sale in 2017. Research areas of interest include, but are not limited to: bacterial, fungal, or viral pathogenesis, zoonosis, host-pathogen interaction, and immunology of infectious disease. It is also required that the research program utilizes MSU’s state-of-the-art large animal BSL2 facility and if appropriate, the MSU Select Agent BSL3/ABSL3 facility. Preference will be given to applicants studying brucellosis, Q fever, chronic wasting disease, or other infectious/zoonotic pathogens requiring advanced biosecurity and/or biocontainment. Successful applicants will integrate their research programs with undergraduate and graduate student instruction and participate in professional service activities. We are particularly interested in individuals whose work complements and strengthens the research interests of MSU faculty, including those focused on infectious diseases, immunology, animal microbiomes, microbial physiology and ecology, molecular evolution, virology, biomedical microbiology, structural biology, and host-pathogen interactions. In addition to outstanding infectious disease research facilities, the Department of Microbiology & Cell Biology offers a dynamic research and teaching environment with state-of-the-art facilities for bioinformatics analyses, flow cytometry, advanced microscopy, structural biology, histology, and small animal research (germ-free and gnotobiotic modeling). The University supports comprehensive cores in metabolomics, proteomics, imaging, and statistical consulting. Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate’s research should employ interdisciplinary approaches, including biochemical, cellular, immunological, bioengineering, molecular biology, and/or novel methodologies with an emphasis on large animal BSL-2 pathogens. We are seeking individuals with research programs to complement and expand expertise in the Department. The Department is nationally recognized for its strengths in immunology, infectious disease, general microbiology, environmental microbiology, microbial ecology, molecular biology, and microbial pathogenesis research. Expectations for this position include developing an externally funded research program, teaching courses consistent with the candidate’s background, mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, participating in appropriate departmental and university service functions, and collaborating with other faculty to enhance interdisciplinary research at MSU. Successful applicants are required to have a doctoral degree in a biomedical discipline, postdoctoral experience, and the potential to establish an independent competitive research program.

  • Ph.D. or M.D., and/or D.V.M. in a biomolecular discipline consistent with teaching/research expectations in livestock health.
  • Post-doctoral experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct an externally funded, competitive, and independent research program in an area important to livestock health.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct and publish high-quality and original research, as indicated by publication in peer-reviewed journals.

    The Microbiology & Cell Biology department houses numerous degree options that prepare students to enter many exciting and emerging fields of research and service. Students can choose from several areas of study that form the foundations and basic level of understanding to solve a variety of problems faced by modern society including human physical health, environmental health, alternative energy, and climate change. Specifically, our faculty are world renowned for their scientific expertise in biomedical research including genetics, infectious diseases, immunology, host/pathogen interactions, disease ecology, cell and developmental biology, microbiome, cellular signaling, and pathogen biology. Our faculty are also internationally recognized as leaders in a range of environmental microbiology research areas, including microbial ecology, biofilm biology, geomicrobiology, astrobiology, bioremediation, and biofuels.
    The department leverages this diversity to provide broad, interdisciplinary curricula to both undergraduate and graduate students. Our undergraduate students consistently receive major awards including Goldwater, Udall, Truman, Fulbright, Rhodes and National Science Foundation fellowships. Our undergraduate curricula can prepare students for either immediate job placement or pursuit of advanced basic science or health professional degrees. Our graduate students successfully compete for National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), National Science Foundation (NSF), American Heart Association, and Fulbright fellowships. Our doctoral students routinely go on to prestigious postdoctoral fellowships (e.g. Harvard, Stanford, NIH, Johns Hopkins, University of Washington and UC Berkeley) or obtain highly sought-after industry positions.
    The Microbiology major has six main undergraduate tracks: Microbiology Pre-Med, Environmental Health, Environmental Microbiology, Biotechnology, and Medical Lab Science. We also offer Microbiology and Genetics minors to enhance other majors; the Microbiology minor is often combined with a degree in Biochemistry. The Cell Biology and Neuroscience major has one track, Biomedical Sciences, and offers minors in both Genetics and Global Health. We are the primary department at MSU for pre-medical and pre-veterinary training. As such, we provide advising for all MSU Pre-Veterinary students and offer a Certificate in Pre-Veterinary Medicine. The department is home to the Montana Medical Laboratory Science Professional Program, and our faculty participate in both the WWAMI Medical Education Program and the WIMU Regional Program in Veterinary Medicine. The department contributes significantly to MSU’s Centers for Biofilm Engineering.
    As a research-intensive department, we offer graduate and undergraduate students the opportunity to experience research under the mentorship of world-renowned scientists. Our faculty are externally funded by NIH, NASA, NSF, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Energy (DoE), and Montana Agricultural Experimentation Station (MAES) as well as by prestigious private foundations, including the W.M. Keck and Murdock Foundations. Students doing research in our department have access to state-of-the-art facilities for biochemistry, flow cytometry, microscopy, genomics, proteomics, cell biology, microbiology, and (meta)genomics/bioinformatics.
