Purpose

This is a full-time position to serve as a key team member in the Ambulatory Surgery Center at UT Health Austin and is responsible for assisting the GI surgical team through the use of equipment and instrumentation to ensure that required equipment is available and functioning properly in the operating room. The Endoscopy Technician also decontaminates, prepares and sterilizes supplies and instruments for the Operating Room (OR) and for various other units within the building. Additionally, this position assists in the maintenance of supplies, equipment and instruments in the OR and supports other operating room procedures when there are no GI cases scheduled. 


Responsibilities

  • Adheres to hand washing requirements, workflow patterns, standard precautions, sterility assurance, biological monitoring, and dress code. Prepares the endoscopy unit adequately and ensures availability of necessary GI equipment and supplies. Cleans GI treatment rooms between procedures and prepares rooms for next case.

  • Assists the physician with interventions as indicated (positioning, preparing specimens, GI tract tattooing, etc.). Validates and maintains event-related protocols; disinfection and/or sterilization load parameters and records; inventory check sheet(s); and equipment monitoring. Assists with sterilization process in accordance with regulatory requirements.

  • Adheres to organizational and departmental policies and procedures. May assist in departmental in-services and training. Inspects, disassembles sorts, cleans, and processes reusable instrumentation and equipment. As designated, reprocesses flexible scopes. Identifies, inspects, and assembles all general and specialty instruments, various power equipment, laser and endoscopes instruments per specifications and manufacturer recommendations.

  • Collects, cleans, checks, distributes, and tracks patient care equipment. As designated, checks inventory assigned supply areas for replenishment, and rotates stock appropriately. Reports all malfunctioning equipment to department supervisor. Complies with facility safety policies and procedures, including those for blood borne pathogens and communicable diseases. Takes prompt corrective actions when hazards are identified (reporting or removing, as appropriate). 

  • Attends required safety training, in-services, and unit meetings. Demonstrates effective written and oral communication skills and actively supports and contributes teamwork in the workplace. Demonstrates responsibility in adhering to posted work schedules. 

  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 
     


Required Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent. 2 to 5 years of experience in GI or hospital surgical setting. BLS Certification within 6 months of hire. Knowledge of various surgical procedures and anesthesia care. Knowledge of current practice of decontamination, high-level disinfectant and sterilization procedures. Demonstrated leadership, organizing, and problem-solving skills. Effective problem-solving skills to include data analysis and judgment to make effective decisions. Ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced, multi-physician practice environment. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with providers, staff, and patients. Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving skills and excellent written and verbal communication skills. Basic computer skills and experience with electronic health records.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.


Preferred Qualifications

Medical assistant certification. Endoscopy/GI or Surgical Technician certification. Experience in an ambulatory surgery center. Experience with general, OBGYN, ophthalmology and orthopedic procedures.


Salary Range

$45,000+ depending on qualifications


Working Conditions

  • Work hours are variable based on patient care needs but are generally Monday-Friday

  • Ability to sit and stand for prolong periods of time, ability to walk, some bending, stooping and stretching

  • Ability to perform overhead and low reaching activities

  • Requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to provide patient care and operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, and occasional use of other office equipment

  • Requires normal range of hearing/eyesight/voice projection to record, prepare, and communicate appropriately  

  • Physical strength for equipment needs and patient care activities; may require frequent lifting/moving up to 50 pounds and occasional lifting/moving in excess of 50 pounds

  • Ability to move quickly in response to patient needs

  • Exposure to noisy equipment
