End Processing Specialist

About the Department:

Stanford Libraries Preservation Department is dedicated to cultivating a culture of preservation throughout the library. We support teaching and research by connecting library staff to our staff, our services, and our resources. We preserve library materials at every stage of the collection lifecycle through a robust program of preventive and collection care, conservation services, and preservation education.

About the Position:

Under general supervision of the Preservation Librarian with some degree of initiative, the End Processing Specialist prepares book and non-book collections for circulation and storage. The incumbent also evaluates circulating collections for repair, housing, and special processing with special attention to the end processing of brittle, fragile and non-standard collection items. The End Processing Specialist is an integral member of the Preservation team, working closely with colleagues in Collection Care to evaluate and address preservation needs for Stanford Libraries collections. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, has strong communication skills, and works well in a team environment. This position is fully on-site.

CORE DUTIES:

End processing - (80%)

        Sort collection materials for end processing following established workflows

        Perform basic book processing for all library locations including rush processing and label and barcode duplication requests

        Assist with collection assessment and housing projects, including preparation of off-the-shelf enclosures and making custom enclosures on computerized mat cutter

        Evaluate circulating collections for repair, housing, and special processing needs

        Perform basic non-book processing for all library locations

        Use FOLIO to track library materials

        Maintain statistics

        Create custom book jacket protectors

        Update workflow and procedure documentation

        Maintain internal inventory of non-standard collection items to be processed 

        Serve as a back-up for all end processing workflows and bindery receiving

Problem solving (20%)

        Communicate with colleagues in other library units and branches to resolve end processing issues

        Perform item searches

        May provide technical support for computer hardware, software, and peripherals as unit Expert Partner liaison with Library Information Technology

        Other duties as assigned according to operational need

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

·         Two-year college degree plus one or more years of experience in an academic library, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

        Knowledge of preservation principles and practices

        Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational skills

        Able to apply judgment in choosing procedures and evaluating alternatives

        Able to communicate library policy

        Able to learn library operational skills

        Basic knowledge of computer and photocopy/scanning equipment technology

 Other Relevant Knowledge, Skills and Abilities May Include:

        Demonstrated ability to perform detailed tasks accurately and efficiently

        Demonstrated computer literacy with word processing, spreadsheets, email and collaboration software

        Experience using an integrated library system

Physical Requirements*:

        Ability to push a cart weighing up to 650 lbs. that requires an initial push force up to 70 lbs.

        Ability to work in an environment that is dusty and or moldy

        Ability to lift books that are up to 10 pounds

        Ability to kneel and reach

        Must be able to stand for many hours

The expected pay range for this position is $25.48 to $32.69 per hour.  Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
