Shift:  PRN: Varied shifts and hours at both 8 and 12 hour bases within Boone County. Occasional nights and weekends.

Salary Range:  $19.09/hr. with a premium pay of $2.00/hr. until 6/6/24.

Job Summary: 

Provide basic life support (BLS) 911 and interfacility response as a part of a two person BLS ambulance, and assist in advanced life support (ALS) 911 and interfacility response under the direction of a paramedic. Assess illnesses and injuries and administer basic level care on incident scenes, prepare patients for transport, and provide continued patient care during transport to a health care facility. Operate emergency vehicles and equipment safely and effectively. Complete patient records in a timely manner and transfer patient information to other healthcare providers.


 


Brief Description:

 

  • Patient Assessment:  Obtain patient medical history and recent history of illness or injury.  Perform a physical assessment to determine the condition of the patient.  Using the assessment to implement care and perform on going assessments to gauge the effectiveness of treatments and adjust treatment as needed.

     

  • Patient Care:   Administer patient care to the extent of University Ambulance protocols for BLS care.  Proficient in performing BLS level skills and using equipment such as spinal immobilization, Hare and Sager traction splints. 
     
  • Ambulance Operations:   Maintain readiness ensuring vehicle are in a state or readiness including being stocked and cleaned.   Operate an Emergency Vehicle is a safe manner.  Ability to work with in the local EMS system.
     
  • ALS Assist:  Provide assistance to Paramedic partners.  Knowledge of ALS equipment used by the Ambulance Service.  Familiarity operating UHC cardiac monitors and applying EKG leads.
     
  • Report writing:   Prepare written reports that document the details of ambulance calls for service that include accurate descriptions of the patient condition, care given, patient response, and will be a basis for QA/QI and patient billing.
     
  • Personal Credentials:  Ensure that the EMT maintains all required licenses, certifications, attends mandatory classes, and UHC system requirements without lapsing.
     

Detailed Description:
  • Arrives to work on time and as scheduled, and under the direction of a paramedic shift supervisor completes duties for the full duration of a work period, to include the inspection and routine cleaning of vehicles, emergency medical equipment, and base locations to ensure serviceability and compliance with safety and infection control regulations and standards.
     
  • Assists paramedics in the management of illness or injury in accordance with current protocols and procedures.
  • Performs primary and secondary physical assessments and obtains a medical history in order to determine level of illness or injury.  Monitors and appropriately interprets vital signs under stressful conditions (environment, weather, terrain) in order to provide appropriate medical interventions.
     
  • Observes, records, and reports to other healthcare providers the patient’s condition or injury, as well as the treatment provided and system changes resulting from said treatment.
     
  • Effectively coordinates patient care with other first responder agencies and local law enforcement, participating in the incident command system as appropriate.
     
  • Communicates with dispatchers and hospital staff to exchange information about emergency situations, to receive instruction for further treatment, and to plan for patient transport to definitive care.
     
  • Prepares or assists in the preparation of patients for transport under current protocols and procedures.
     
  • Completes and transfers patient care information and records in a timely manner, taking every reasonable precaution to maintain security and protection of sensitive data.
     
  • Provides comfort and reassurance to patients and patients’ family members.
     
  • Safely operates emergency vehicle in accordance with state law and MU Health Care policies during stressful situations.
     
  • Teaches and/or assists in in-service and public education programs to hospital and lay personnel.

Requires current state of Missouri licensure as an Emergency Medical Technician; prefer high school graduation or GED.


Requires possession of a valid Missouri Class E or higher Drivers License.
Successful completion of the 40-hour EMT-Dispatching or comparable course or completion within one year of hiring may be necessary for some positions.

Requires Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the AHA.

Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.

 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met with or without reasonable accommodation. The performance of these physical demands is an essential function of the job. This position is very active and requires ambulating, reaching, and moving objects weighing up to and over 20 lbs.

 

This role also routinely comes into contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses. This position is in a health care facility open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rotating shifts as well as holiday and work during inclement weather will be required.
