Position Description:

 

Emory Law, a top-tier law school in the thriving city of Atlanta and the home of the Hugh F. MacMillan Law Library, is seeking an enthusiastic, creative, and service-oriented professional to join our team as an Emory Law Library Fellow.  We invite candidates who are recent graduates or currently enrolled students of an accredited library science or information science program, or recent graduates or currently enrolled students in a J.D. program at an ABA-accredited law school to apply. All candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to a career in law librarianship. 

 

The Emory Law Library Fellow program is a full-time, 12-month appointment (renewable for up to a total of three years) and available beginning September 1, 2021.  This paid fellowship (including benefits) is an extremely rare opportunity for an excellent candidate who may still be preparing to launch a career in law librarianship; he, she, or they will gain valuable skills and experience in a full-time, salaried position. 

 

Program Description:

 

The Emory Law Library Fellowship Program is intended to give librarians interested in law librarianship as a career an opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge in an academic law library setting.  Fellows working in the MacMillan Law Library, under the general supervision of the Associate Law Librarian for Research Services, will learn about the overall functions, policies, and practices of the MacMillan Law Library across all library departments including Research Services, Access Services, Collection Services, Emory Law Scholarly Commons, and Emory Law Archives.  The MacMillan Law Library team will work with the Fellow to customize their fellowship experience to meet the needs and interests of both the MacMillan Law Library as well as the interests and prior experience of the Fellow.  Fellows will undertake and complete a project based on the needs and capabilities of the MacMillan Law Library as well as the interests and prior experience of the Fellow. 

 

Qualifications

 

Required:

• A J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and an M.L.I.S (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited institution. Candidates who are currently enrolled and actively taking classes in one of these programs and who will finish no later than the first anniversary of the applicant’s hiring date are encouraged to apply;
• Experience conducting legal and non-legal research in both digital and print formats;
• Strong communication skills; including a high comfort level interacting with a wide range of patrons;
• Demonstrated ability to work independently within a framework of assigned responsibilities, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively with others.

Preferred:

• Experience providing library reference or other type of customer service experience;

• Demonstrable success in teaching or public speaking;
• Desire to participate in professional law librarianship activities at regional and national levels; and
• Foreign language knowledge.
