Job Description

The LX group is a crucial enterprise-focused organization, supporting ASU efforts to deliver innovative learning projects, at scale, to all learners, and focused on ensuring greater inclusion and student success.

The Emerging Technology Specialist facilitates cross-functional groups in the exploration, evaluation, and implementation of early-stage technologies. This position supports and lends vision to establishing formal technology evaluation approaches, collaborating with groups across the university on the impacting uses of emerging technology to support learning, and testing new learning technologies and determining how they can be implemented at scale. Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate a passion for learning new technologies, an understanding of instructional challenges surrounding the use of technology to support learning, experience working in or with media (graphics, video, or games) development process, advanced project coordination capabilities, effective interpersonal and presentation skills, successful experience in a team environment, and an appreciation for working with diverse audiences.

Essential Duties

  • Establish and execute formalized evaluation approaches for early-stage technologies.
  • Serve as a resource to the enterprise for identifying technologies that solve instructional challenges.
  • Research and evaluate emerging digital platform technologies, pedagogies, and practices and provide ongoing ideas, guidance, and recommendations to the enterprise community.
  • Facilitate conversational sessions with faculty around platform tools, pedagogy approaches, and roadmap strategies.
  • Implement evaluation procedures to assess the effectiveness of using technologies in teaching/learning experiences.
  • Develop media that creates awareness and understanding of new technologies.
  • Collects and analyzes end-user feedback and communicates this analysis through written descriptions, diagrams, screenshots, screencasts, and live demonstrations so it is helpful for designers and development staff.
  • Creates project implementation or revision plans that take resource availability, timelines, and competing priorities into account.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Educational Technology, Project Management or related field AND five years of related experience two (2) of which include supporting academic technology services in a higher education setting as well as experience with online course development and design and at least two years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. 


Desired Qualifications

Master’s Degree in relevant field and expert-level (8-years) experience in the learning and development/instructional design discipline coupled with contemporary digital technology/learning platform assessment, utilization, and deployment in higher education setting.

  • Knowledge of current and future trends in educational technologies
  • Advanced project management and coordination capabilities including the ability to accomplish tasks and projects with multiple and overlapping deadlines
  • Comprehensive understanding of instructional design principles, methods, and techniques for adult learning
  • Ability to explain technical concepts in non-technical terms to diverse stakeholder groups: faculty, students, staff, and administrators
  • Problem-solving with the ability to apply strong critical and logical analysis to scenarios in the context of educational technology use 
  • Ability to model empathy, compassion and emotional intelligence
  • Experience hiring in a values-led organization, emphasizing diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging
  • Ability to help foster a safe psychological space for all teammates where everyone can thrive
  • Ability to stimulate changes in individual, institutional, and corporate behaviors to create a more sustainable environment

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
