Position Summary
This recruitment is for five (5) Medical/Nursing Assistant positions.  By applying, you will be considered for all five (5) positions:
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The UNC Emergency Medicine Scribe program was founded in late 2012 by emergency medicine providers at UNC as an effort to reduce documentation time and increase time spent on patient contact. Scribes are motivated undergraduates or recent graduates trained on medical documentation and ED flow to assist providers with efficiency. Scribes generally accompany one provider per shift to complete their charts and help department flow. Our providers include EM residents, attending physicians, and advanced practice providers (APPs). UNC EM scribes work in both the UNC Chapel Hill emergency department and the UNC Hillsborough emergency department. The UNC EM program prides itself on being a home-grown program with a successful training program and excellent reputation.
MINIMUM COMMITMENT:
12 months
TIME COMMITMENT EXPECTATIONS:
Minimum 20 hours per week (shifts vary from 5-10 hours) for a period of at least 12 months as well as required attendance to scribe meetings held once per month. Meetings are generally 1 hour in length. Scribes are expected to work at least 2 overnight shifts per month and are also required to be scheduled for at least one on-call shift per month. Scribes may have to work holidays and must have access to a reliable vehicle (for transportation to Hillsborough hospital). Scribes submit availability each month for which days/times they are unavailable and can submit leave requests for longer vacations. Applicants who can commit to working 30-40 hours per week will be given priority during the selection process and are eligible for higher hourly compensation.
TRAINING DESCRIPTION:
During the training period, scribes will be required to read the scribe manual, memorize ~400 medical terms and abbreviations, and will be tested on their understanding of medical terms and documentation procedures. Classroom training will consist of an initial in-person orientation session, asynchronous training modules, and two in-person exams. In-person events will be scheduled based on availability. In conjunction with the classroom training, scribes will spend about 1-1.5 months shadowing experienced scribes in all areas of the emergency department (~15 shifts before going solo). After this shadowing period, scribes will begin working independently.
