Occupational Summary
Participate in a variety of duties data collection duties for a research study in elementary schools with ESL and classroom teachers. Responsibilities include administering student assessments and conducting classroom observations. Must be able to work in-person school hours which are typically 7:30 to 3:00 PM. Must have own transportation (reimbursement for mileage). Initial appointment through June 2023. This is a part-time position with four waves of data collection during the school year.
The Center for Child and Family Policy recently received funding from the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) for an efficacy trial of a teacher professional development (PD) program in elementary schools in North Carolina. This comprehensive teacher PD program provides English as a second language (ESL) and classroom teachers with a framework for collaboration, skills for implementing high-impact instructional strategies, and approaches for incorporating families’ cultural wealth into the classroom. The PD program is based on research supporting teacher PD and includes three days of workshops, ongoing implementation coaching, and weekly collaboration sessions between the ESL and classroom teachers. Work to be Performed
- This is a part-time position with concentrated work in the schools for about 25 hours per week for 4 windows of data collection throughout the school year. Each data collection window will take about 5-6 weeks. Some weeks will not have any scheduled work.
- Conduct classroom observations and collect data using three structured observation protocols.
- Manage and administer student assessments on iPads in small groups.
- Administer student assessments.
- Participate in coordinating data collection activities and schedules with other members of the research team.
- Participate in biweekly research team meetings at Duke University.
- Perform a variety of routine and complex clerical duties as well as research and data processing duties to assist investigators in collecting and managing research data.
- Adapt to changing data collection procedures due to remote teaching and learning and other modifications to the study.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Work generally requires a bachelor's degree in a field related to the specific position. A Master’s degree is preferred. Work requires knowledge of data collection and research principles, Microsoft office products normally acquired through two years post-secondary education.
Experience
Work requires one year of experience in a related position or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience. Preferences include experience teaching English Learners, experience with school-based data collection; and experience working with teachers OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
