Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | Building Services provide full maintenance and repair services for all UNC facilities and ensure the proper operation of those facilities in support of the UNC mission of teaching, research and public service. Building Services supports more than 300 campus buildings with more than 18 million gross square feet of space. The teams that provide quality maintenance, repair and construction services that support the teaching, research, and public service mission of the University include Campus Maintenance, EMCS, Facilities Operations Support, Housing Support, HVAC Systems, Life Safety Services, and the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling. The Life Safety Services section is a specialized unit within the Building Services Division of Facilities Services. This section is comprised of the Life Safety/Electronic-Specialty Shop, the Access Control/Key Shop, and the Emergency Generator Shop. This organizational unit delivers a high level of maintenance and support to safeguard human life, property, research, and other critical areas of significant financial and time investments for the entire University campus community including: all residence halls, classrooms facilities, research lab facilities, athletics facilities, medical school facilities, and offices facilities. These areas include but are not limited to: the Central Alarm Receiving System (CARS), all fire alarm detection and suppression systems, security and CCTV systems, key control, accessibility controllers, Biometric and Card Access, equipment alarm systems, and backup power emergency generators. Additionally, this unit supports all facets of Facilities Services, Energy Services, Environment Health & Safety, Public Safety, Facilities Planning & Construction, and Residential Student Housing in their efforts to support the campus community, all of which contribute to the University’s mission of teaching, research and public service. |
Position Summary | A SIGN-ON BONUS OF $4,235 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT OF THIS POSITION PAID IN 2 INSTALLMENTS WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF HIRE: $2,117.50 WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE DATE & $2,117.50 12 MONTHS AFTER HIRE DATE. Serves as a team member in support of the mission of the Life Safety-Access Control shop in the daily functions and responsibilities of the shop, including but not limited to performing installations, modifications, maintenance, and inspections of Facilities Services building key control cabinet network and the UNC One Card access system, which includes integration with ADA automatic door openers, door alarms, biometric access readers, and building fire alarm systems. Solid knowledge and staying abreast of industry standards, N.C Building Codes, NFPA standards, and ADA codes are critical in this position. Performs Preventive Maintenance (PM) Inspections and makes repairs on access control systems, biometrics readers, security alarms, CCTV and UNC One Card access system in accordance with but not limited to manufacturer specifications, ADA standards and University policies. The specific system manufacturer certification is individually obtained and maintained to perform installations, repairs or system modifications. Currently, the Life Safety-Access Control shop maintains on (CBORD) manufacturer system certifications. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | Associate’s degree in electronics; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Training in electronic technology and ability to apply such in installation, troubleshooting and repair applications to the system and subsystem level. In-depth knowledge of various computer operating systems and programs must be demonstrated in performing routine maintenance on all processor-based systems to achieve problem resolution. Demonstrated ability to use laptop computers for system diagnostic interrogations and troubleshooting for extraction of required system histories. In-depth knowledge of applicable and evolving codes, rules and regulations to perform installations and upgrades of systems that are supported by the Life Safety-Access Control shop. Requires sufficient knowledge to be able to recommend potential system software and hardware that may be required, and provide training to end users on the proper utilization and operation of the installed systems. A valid NC driver’s license per NC Motor Fleet Management Regulations section III B. North Carolina Locksmith License required, or ability to obtain one within 12 months. Ability to troubleshoot non-standard electronic devices for which documentation is incomplete or not available. In-depth knowledge of and experience in programming, servicing, and repairing card access systems, security alarms and CCTV. In-depth knowledge of and experience in the application of various codes and standards including but not limited to NC Department of Insurance requirements for access control systems and ADA requirements. Provides focused support for Bio-Safety Level (BSL) 2+ and 3 labs, thus a baseline blood draw, a physical and inoculations are required. Entry into hot labs with an Environment, Health & Safety escort is required, which requires wearing respiratory protection and annual medical certification, fit testing, and training. Also requires emergency on-call duties in direct support of BSL 2+/3 labs on a rotating basis, and the ability to provide oversight to other trades supporting these labs. Serves as a mandatory employee and reports to work in support of essential University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions may require the University to close. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | A technical school or community college degree in electronics and/or demonstrated experience in the repair and maintenance of a variety of electronic devices or an equivalent combination of education and experience. |

Special Physical/Mental Requirements | Ability to climb ladders and work from scaffolds; bend, squat, and stoop; and move objects weighing up to 40 pounds to an overhead position. As a mandatory employee who is required to report to work during periods of adverse weather or other emergency events, the incumbent of this position is subject to significant physical effort depending on the nature of the emergency. |
