Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Engineering Division has openings for an Electronics Engineer to join the team.

 

This is a matrix position within Engineering that supports the various user facilities and projects at LBNL. In this role, you will be providing support to the 88-Inch Cyclotron Electronics Group.  Assignments will range from electronics circuit design, fabrication, and debugging to development of control software for the B88 control systems of  device-specific digital electronics and industrial PLCs.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Develop and deploy control system software and services that includes configuration and programming of industry standard PLCs.
  • Under general supervision, apply technical expertise and knowledge of standard engineering/scientific concepts and practices to provide multifunctional electronic design for implementation of experimental apparatus, equipment, systems, or facilities. Determine design approaches and parameters.  Analyze equipment to establish operating data, conduct experimental tests and evaluate results.
  • Provide resolutions to technical problems of complex scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of identifiable factors, providing expertise and guidance to technical personnel.
  • Develop graphical user interfaces and loggers with standard programming tools.
  •  Assist with commissioning of controls and associated software tools with support from domain scientists and engineers.
  • Maintain and generate documentation describing work done and systems built. Follow standard methodologies for software development in a collaborative environment.
  • Assist with improvements to team processes including source control, issue management, code review, documentation, and testing.
  • Provide technical input and apply standard principles, theories, and/ or concepts in the development of new methods and concepts.
  • Maintain communication with all key project personnel, including maintaining logbooks, updating online document repositories, coordinating and/or contributing to meetings.
  • Successfully finish the safety training required by the Laboratory and employ those skills in daily practice.

 

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • May lead technical staff and provide oversight on their work to assure that task completion is timely and of quality.
  • May Supervise and provide daily guidance to students and interns.
  • Support the preparation of new proposals, from the development of technical concepts to the preparation of budgets and schedules.

 

What is Required:

  • Master’s degree in Engineering or Bachelor's Degree in Engineering with relevant experience.
  • Proficient programming PLC ladder logic.
  • Knowledge and experience interfacing hardware with PLC systems.
  • Direct experience in modeling and designing electronic circuits for analog systems, including implementation and optimization in scientific applications.
  • Extensive knowledge of CAD tools for schematic capture and printed circuit board design, such as PADS, OrCAD, KiCad, etc.
  • Effective oral and written communications skills sufficient to document, present, and summarize results of research and development activities.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of technicians, engineers, scientists, managers, and vendors.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with Allen-Bradley PLCs.
  • Knowledge of the installation and/or operation of the following types of systems:
    • RF systems.
    • Personnel safety and equipment interlocks.
    • High vacuum control systems.
    • Low conductivity and cooled water monitoring systems.
    • Large electro and/or permanent magnets.
    • High current and/or high voltage DC power supplies.
    • Electrical power distribution.
    • Electronic equipment and electronics enclosures.
    • Database management tools.
  • Knowledge of networking hardware and protocols.
  • Programming skills in C, C++, and Python.

If hired at a level 2:

This full salary range of this position is between $7,845 to $13,241 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $8,826 to $10,788 per month depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

If hired at a level 3:

This full salary range of this position is between $9,332 to $15,746 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $10,498 to $12,831 per month depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
