Organization Overview:

The Magnet Division (MD) designs, builds, and tests superconducting magnets for use in particle accelerators world-wide. The Magnet Division also builds magnets for various other applications (e.g., Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage) and provides magnetic measurement services lab-wide.

Position Description:

Magnet Division has an opening for an Electronics Technician to construct and wire electronic subsystems for our magnet test facility. In addition, this position will maintain and repair various existing systems critical to facility operation. This position will require close interaction with technicians and engineers. Tasking will also include provision of technical support for development and special projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assemble electronic sub systems from assembly drawings and circuit diagram provided by an engineer.

  • Repair and fault diagnosis of electronic sub systems and high current magnet power supplies.

  • Operate electronic measurement equipment, power supplies, and small specialized systems.

  • Stock and keep track of spare parts, maintain work area and housekeeping.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus: 6 years relevant work experience.

  • a BS degree in a technical field or;

  • a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 4 years experience or;

  • a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 5 years relevant work experience or;

  • Relevant work experience should include wiring, maintaining, and troubleshooting electrical systems and equipment.

  • Understanding of basic electronics principles.

  • Electronic system assembly skills like soldering, wiring, enclosure design etc.

  • Experience with analog/digital electronics, computers and standard test equipment (function generators, oscilloscopes, multi-meters).

  • Must be able to work from schematics, diagrams, and written procedures.

  • Basic computer operating skills.

  • Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with a diverse group of technical staff.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with Lock-Out, Tag-Out procedures.

  • Solder and re-work techniques for through-hole and SMD components for high density PCB assemblies.

  • Troubleshooting skills in digital and analog circuits

  • Knowledge of spreadsheet software, measurement systems and computer programming of devices.

  • Basic understanding of PLC ladder logic and object oriented programming languages.

  • Ability to research and understand specifications or manuals for outside products that interface with our systems.

  • Work hour flexibility and overtime availability.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Must be able to climb and work from ladders

  • Must be able to lift at least 30 pounds

  • This is an on-site position with no hybrid/remote opportunities.

  • The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate position level dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge, skills, as well as years of relevant experience.

This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $72050 - $108100 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, and certifications, and also aligned with the internal peer group.
