Summary

The Metadata Services unit ensures the accuracy of data within key systems that provide access to University Library managed resources. The unit performs copyright reviews, resolves resource outages, provides usage statistics, and manages the ticketing system used across the Technical Services department.

The Electronic Resources Librarian assists with the licensing subscription and package management of electronic resources acquired for the University Library. Specifically, this position coordinates licensing and order details between points of contact (e.g., selectors, vendors, procurement), documents these terms and conditions, and supports the Resource Management and Licensing Librarian.

The Electronic Resources Librarian is responsible for the ongoing analysis of workflows within the department and the enhancement of processes across teams. The incumbent is also responsible for administering the ticketing system to support workflows in Technical Services and collaborate on issues across the library. 

Reporting Structure:
This position reports to the Head of the Metadata Services Unit in Technical Services, a department within the Collections division.  

Supervisory Experience:
This position does not include supervisory responsibilities.

Responsibilities*

45% Assists with the licensing, subscription, and package management of electronic resources acquired for the University Library.

  • Will review and negotiate license agreements with publishers and vendors to ensure UM preferred terms are incorporated. Facilitates authorization of licenses in consultation and coordination with U-M central procurement. Supports the Resource Management and Licensing Librarian with licensing issues and questions for selectors, EChairs, and Collection Coordinators. Maintains and adds licenses and licensing resources to Alma.

45% Lead workflow and assessment efforts for electronic resources.

  • Analyzes documented workflows and reimagines or adapts workflows appropriate for various systems. When appropriate, consults vendor documentation. Facilitates adoption of workflows for departmental unit members through principles of change management. Develops criteria for evaluating workflow and other pertinent information related to workflow management, reviews criteria at periodic intervals, and, if necessary, recommends and/or implements adjustments. Develops and maintains policies and procedures, including currency in technological advancements that can enhance workflow (MySQL, OpenRefine, etc.). Assesses continuing local needs; configures and monitors automated means of completing workflows. Maintains and keeps informed of industry-wide standards; keeps the Library on the leading edge of collection assessment and informs Library partners of impact. Administers TeamDynamix ticketing system by integrating new developments into workflows as appropriate and managing technician accounts.

10% Collaborates with colleagues across the University Library, our consortium, and nationally to review and redesign collections-related processes and workflows.

  • Commit to ongoing professional development through continuing education, attendance at professional conferences, webinars, following related professional literature, blogs and listservs, and other learning venues. Fosters a collegial, collaborative, and creative environment. Maintains current awareness of and professional competence with national and international trends and developments. Attends professional meetings and workshops to monitor changes in standards and practices.

Required Qualifications*
  • ALA-accredited master's degree or an equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree and experience.
  • Ability to analyze and find solutions, as well as solid service orientation, technical aptitude, and a demonstrated commitment to staff development and diversity in the workplace.
  • Project management skills, specifically organizational, analytical, and planning skills; effective flexibility and adaptability to balance multiple assignments and projects.
  • A clear vision for the future of acquisitions and resource access and will work to achieve that vision in a fluid technological environment.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills encompassing the ability to interact collegially with a variety of colleagues and levels of staff, aligning with our organizational philosophy of One Library and the ability to promote teamwork, equity, and inclusiveness.

Underfill Statement

Appointment is anticipated at Assistant Librarian or Associate Librarian rank. The salary is dependent on qualifications and experience. The target range for this position is $58 - $64,000 for the Assistant Librarian rank and $64,000 - $73,000 for the Associate Librarian rank. This position is subject to a contractual increase of 3% in 2024.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, on behalf of their Librarian, Archivists, and Curator bargaining unit (LEO-GLAM), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
