Job Description:

  • Fire Alarm Related: 35% Repairs, services and maintains all fire related systems on campus, including digitized notification system monitoring. Mounts/replaces sensors and performs all necessary tasks to ensure optimal wiring layout. Installs all wiring to connect components, complying with all safety standards. Troubleshoots problems to system, board and device wiring related to all campus fire alarm systems. Interprets diagrams, plans, schematics, drawings, and manufacturers' programming for fire alarms. Installs new equipment and systems relating to fire alarms. Cleans and tests all controls and field devices according to codes governing preventative maintenance of life safety equipment; maintains all related records, test results and inspection reports. Conducts fire alarm plan reviews, and works with outside contractors on projects as assigned; works with Electrical Supervisor and Waltham Fire Department on all Fire system commissioning and acceptance inspections.

  • Electrical Related: 35% Receives and completes general work orders within the electrical shop that are not fire alarm related. Installs, maintains, troubleshoots and makes repairs to electrical equipment and systems including generators, transformers, switchboards, motors, conduit systems, P.A. systems and VFDs. Installs and maintains wiring systems and fixtures in existing buildings. Works from wiring diagrams, schematics, blueprints, sketches and/or verbal instructions to plan and layout construction work. Makes necessary computations relating to load requirements of wiring and electrical equipment. Provides appropriate support during events, annual electrical shutdown, opening of school and commencement.

  • General: 30% Follows proper safety procedures and observes all safety rules and regulations including OSHA. Reports building damages, malfunctioning equipment, needed maintenance and/or repairs in assigned work areas. Responds to emergency call ins Inputs data into computerized work order system, recording time and work order information. Composes and submits documentation and reports for each job/work accomplished following department standards and procedures. Participates in training to keep and acquire knowledge, skills and abilities in order to remain current with standard operational practices and revised standards Maintains appropriate certifications and licenses Interacts professionally and follows up with members of the campus community.

Additional Job Description

  • Must be physically able to perform all of the essential duties of the position as set forth in this Position Description, including but not limited to the following:

  • Observe safety rules at all times

  • Read, write, understand and carry out oral and written instructions in English

  • Work on ladders and scaffolds, and in bucket trucks, pits and manholes

  • Utilize a variety of electrician’s and fire alarm technician’s tools and instruments

  • Drive a University vehicle

  • Manually lift up to 60 pounds (heavier material or equipment is lifted using other methods)

Job Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Journeyman's License issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

  • Minimum of 5-7 years full-time experience working as a Journeyman electrician installing and maintaining electrical systems

  • Minimum of 3 years documented work experience installing / inspecting fire alarm field devices and programming / servicing fire alarm systems, preferably within the fire alarm industry

  • Sufficient knowledge of HVAC and plumbing equipment in order to assist those trades in making minor repairs and adjustments

  • Valid and current Massachusetts Driver’s License

Education:

  • High School diploma or GED required. Associates degree preferred. Vocational or technical training preferred.

Work Experience: 5-7 years

  • Minimum of 5 years documented work experience installing / inspecting fire alarm field devices and programming / servicing fire alarm systems, preferably within the fire alarm industry.

License:

  • Journeyman's License issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts - required; Valid and current Massachusetts Driver’s License - Required.

  • State certification in Fire Alarm Testing preferred.
