Job Summary
To provide journeyman level repairs, maintenance, installation, testing and service of electrical systems. Responsible for the prompt performance of assigned electrical and related duties. Including the supervision of semi-skilled workers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Installs new electrical services to buildings and extends old services. This includes:
    • The removal of old feeders, underground trenching to location and the sizing and pulling of new conduit and feeders per NEC.
    • Removing old electrical switchgear and installing new.
    • Replacing breakers in switchgear and panels.
  • Installs, maintains, tests and repairs electric motors, transformers, generators, control panels, switches, circuit breakers, outlets, fixtures, fittings and accessories. This includes:
    • the layout and installation of luminaries, working on energized parts, tracing out electrical circuits, installing new generators and ATS, installing new transformers and installing new outlets and switches in remodeled renovations.
  • Installs electrical conduit for feeders and branch circuits. This includes:
    • sizing the conduit, feeders and branch circuits per the (NEC) National Electrical Code.
    • Must have knowledge of conduit benders(power benders and hand benders) and conduit power traders ( pony threader, power threader and hog head threader).
  • Installs and repairs underground electrical conduit and wire for pole lighting and services. This includes:
    • Digging or running a trencher for new underground conduit, laying out the locations of new pole lighting or services, repairing broken underground conduits, tracing out underground damaged wires and replacing them with new and locating underground electrical for DIGTESS.
  • Installs magnetic starters, disconnects, and motor rated switches for HVAC and plumbing equipment, ballast and tombstones for light fixtures, flood and street lighting.
  • Replaces light bulbs.
  • Respond to on call emergencies before/during/after hours of operation. This includes:
    • Fires, electrical outages, floods and icy conditions.
    • Electrician must have knowledge of campus electrical distribution.
    • Must be able to identify the problem, plan for the appropriate action, communicate severity and fix the problem. This also includes carrying an on-call phone.
  • Must have experience in the demo of existing and new electrical renovation projects throughout the campus. This includes:
    • Reading blue prints, tracking cost, writing change orders, sizing panels, the layout of outlets, switches and luminaries.
    • Also includes calculating loads and installing conduit and wire for new feeders and branch circuits.
    • All installation must follow campus specifications and the National Electrical Code.
  • Install new electrical needed for research equipment, assist HVAC, Plumbing and housing departments with troubleshooting and installations.
  • Assist with the installation of electrical for special events. This includes:
    • Concerts, student move-in, homecoming, graduation ceremonies, Special Olympics, special dinners, student welcoming day, sporting events and other student activity events.
  • Must be able to pass and maintain yearly training. This includes:
    • Electrical continuing education, hazardous communication, security training, drivers education, first aid training, asbestos training, boom lift training, scissor lift training, bucket truck training, NFPA 70 training and fork lift training.
  • Must be able to take over supervision of other electrical personnel when supervisors are not on campus.
  • Drive a UTA owned vehicle.
  • Performs other duties assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent experience and electrical journeyman’s license.
  • Five (5) years’ experience as a licensed electrical journeyman.
  • Valid Texas class “C” driver’s license or state equivalent to operate a personal vehicle.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Must be accurate in all phases of work performed.
  • Must have knowledge of medium voltage (15kv) terminations.
  • Able to operate one-man lifts, boom lifts, bucket truck and scissor lifts.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Capable of using meters and related equipment.
  • Knowledge of computer-based work order system.
  • Knowledge and function of electrical material.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools common to the electrical trade.
  • Knowledge and function of electrical material.
  • Ability to effectively execute oral and written instruction in English.
  • Ability to complete all physical tasks as needed.
Other Requirements
Working Conditions
  • Conditions do involve exposure to all weather elements and medium to high voltage electrical.
  • Must be able to work off of ladders, scaffolding, and tops/roofs of buildings.
  • Working conditions are considered acceptable, but occasionally involve exposure to one or more disagreeable elements such as biohazards, toxic lab chemicals, poisonous gases dust, dirt, and the need to work in confined spaces, extreme cold or hot and all weather conditions.
Special Conditions for Eligibility
  • Alertness and careful attention is required to avoid injury to self and others.
  • Must have Texas electrical license before starting employment and be familiar with NFPAA 70,101 and 1.
