Overview: 
The Systems Engineering Group within the Nuclear Facility Management Section of the Nonreactor Nuclear Facilities Division (NNFD) is seeking to hire an electrical engineer. This group is responsible for the NNFD facility’s configuration management program, providing technical support to operations and maintenance, and performs systems analysis.  The electrical engineer in this role is responsible for designing, developing, installing, managing, and/or maintaining electrical distribution equipment and components.  The main scope of work is to ensure that the necessary systems and processes operate effectively, efficiently, and safely.  This role requires a thorough understanding of the operational processes in a multidisciplinary role and working closely with a variety of colleagues such as operations, procurement, design, and craft personnel.  The person in this role will also serve as a Division Electrical Safety Officer (DESO) and be expected to conduct NEC inspections.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • CONFIGURATION MANAGEMENT
    • Prepares engineering designs for replacement and upgrade of structures, systems, and components
    • Performs calculations and interpretations of industry code to support design development
    • Reviews design specifications to determine performance criteria for material upgrades
    • Writes material specifications and initiates procurement of nuclear safety-related materials
    • Prepares and implements rigorous testing and inspection methods for utilizing commercial grade components in nuclear safety systems
    • Implements modifications in accordance with configuration control processes
    • Designs and develops new control systems
    • Develops design output documents
  • MAINTENANCE SUPPORT
    • Troubleshoots and analyzes system and component failures and develops corrective actions
    • Provides field work technical direction to craft supervisors and craft
    • Develops and implements preventive maintenance instructions.
    • Develops operating/test procedures
    • Performs and maintains the aging status of electrical equipment on a continual basis
    • Maintains the maintenance equipment database for new and existing electrical equipment
  • OPERATIONS SUPPORT
    • Performs evaluations to determine equipment impact on facility operation
    • Serve as the DESO for NNFD, as outlined by the Standards Based Management System (SBMS).
    • Provide guidance regarding the purchase, fabrications, and/or modification of electrical equipment for Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) equipment or electrical-authority having jurisdiction (E-AHJ) approved equipment prior to use.
    • Acquire and maintain the ‘Qualified Electrical Worker’ role.
    • Provide guidance on electrical safety requirements and opportunities for improvement for safe electrical work practices and electrical Lock/ Tag/Verify (LTV) issues.
    • Review justifications and qualifications of electrical workers for line management.
    • Assist with the development of research safety summaries, work plans, procedures, instructions, and other electrical safety related documents; approve these documents as requested by line management.
    • Review and approve work activities or safety procedures related to custom or special research equipment.
  • SYSTEM ANALYSIS
    • Analyzes and trends results of preventive and predictive maintenance data
    • Analyzes equipment performance history
    • Ensures compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering or Engineering Technology with 8+ years of applicable experience.  An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered instead of a B.S. degree.
  • 2 or more years of engineering experience in electrical distribution systems design and/or maintenance.
  • Ability to diagnose equipment problems and develop formal instructions for performance and documentation of repairs.
  • Experience in leading maintenance tasks, procedure development, procurement of materials, and equipment analysis.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience performing unlisted electrical equipment inspections.
  • One year or more of nuclear experience is highly preferred. Familiarity with maintenance activities in a nuclear operating environment and regulatory programs, including DOE Orders pertaining to conduct of operation and maintenance.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an “L” clearance.  This position also requires Rad Worker II training as well as respirator qualification.  Therefore, candidate must be medically qualified for Rad Worker and respirator.
  • Experience performing electrical system analysis, such as load flow, short-circuit, arc-flash, and coordination studies using ETAP, SKM, or similar software
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills,
  • Good interpersonal skills, and ability to work well as a team member
