Position Summary Information


Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Engineering Services Department (ES) within Facilities Services provides engineering services to the UNC Chapel Hill campus, a highly complex campus with a large number and variety of buildings and structures. ES provides engineering expertise for all engineering facets for the campus. ES is responsible for project development for all University Engineering led projects including repair, renovation and new construction; management of capital budgets and administration of design contracts associated with these projects. In addition, ES is responsible for development of high functioning campus engineering design standards, design of engineered systems, inspection of all projects implemented within campus buildings, engineering support of Building Services personnel, leads energy management and water conservation efforts, and building commissioning services.
Position Summary
This position functions as an Electrical Engineer within the Facilities Engineering group. Position will provide full project management and engineering services for projects (concentrating on electrical). Duties include scope development with campus users, contract negotiation, project review, and project management to ensure these projects are delivered on schedule and within budget. Additional duties include in-house design in area of expertise, including development of engineering drawings ,and providing technical support to Construction Shops, Building Services, and Environment, Health & Safety. The Facility Engineer must understand NC design, bid, build, processes, be familiar with building infrastructure systems and possess the ability to execute complex technical projects.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in the engineering discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience Some positions may require licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Substantial knowledge of engineering theory, techniques, practices, procedures, building codes and laws, as well as skills in applying these for problem-solving, system design, maintenance protocols, and identification for energy conservation opportunities. Knowledge of state and federal rules, and regulations, governing design and construction of building systems; including National Electrical Code (NEC), NC Fire Prevention Code, and corresponding NC revisions. Ability to review designs and interpret related plans and specifications, estimate costs, and to technically direct others and review and evaluate their work. Must have the ability to cope with the management of multiple projects with established completion dates and budget limitations. Excellent skills in written and verbal communication, as well as ability to lead, manage, and document small group meeting series. A valid NC driver’s license or ability to obtain one prior to start date.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Preference for Registered Professional Engineer or Engineering Intern in State of NC. Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, project management software, MS Office Suite and related electrical design software. Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from appropriately accredited four-year college or university and three (3) years of progressive experience in Facilities Engineering and/or the design and construction of buildings, including direct experience with electrical engineering design for facilities; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
