Job Summary

The successful Electrical Engineer will provide technical support services to Wade Power Plant for electrical issues. Support projects for Wade Power Plant and Utilities Distribution. Review engineering submittals from outside architectural engineering firms. Make recommendations to improve plant reliability.  Assist with coordination of existing high voltage electrical system activities for West Lafayette campus including isolation of the primary electrical system for maintenance and construction of 12.47 kV and 2.4 kV electrical distribution system. Provide technical troubleshooting support as well as planning of maintenance, replacement, and expansion of electrical components such as transformers, switches, cables, relays, controls, switchgear, motors, motor control centers, and grounding systems.  


This position represents a dual level posting and will be filled as an Electrical Engineering Specialist, Associate (P1) or next higher level Electrical Engineering Specialist (P2). The hiring manager will determine the job level based on the skills, experience, and qualifications of the selected candidate.


Energy and Utilities is responsible for utility production and distribution and campus energy management.

    • to climb stairs, ladders, and work from heights of up to 100 feet
    • to enter equipment manholes and confined spaces
    • to work under pressure and meet critical deadlines

 

What is helpful (Preferred):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering 

Short Description

To be considered for the P2 position you’ll need the above requirements plus the following:


Education and Experience (P2):

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field 
  • Two years of experience in electrical operations management including exposure to computer control instrumentation and power system components such as protective relaying
  • Experience:
    • working for a utility company preferred in areas of generation, transmission, and distribution of power
    • conducting root cause analyses
    • working on multiple projects in a team environment

 

Skills Needed: 

  • Knowledge in functional area of primary above and underground electrical distribution systems design, construction methods, and operations  
  • Knowledge of project management/engineering best practices 
  • Ability to produce project justifications
  • Thorough knowledge in the functional operation of a Power Plant including areas of electrical generation and instrumentation & controls 
  • Ability to interpret building plans, circuit schematics and expertise in electrical system design

 

What is helpful (Preferred):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Engineering consultation experience
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and regulations 
  • Proven understanding of electrical engineering design and construction techniques as they relate to power plants and utilities distribution
