The Space Physics Group (https://spacephysics.princeton.edu/) in the Department of Astrophysical Sciences, Princeton University, is seeking exceptional candidates to develop and deliver the Solar Wind and Pickup Ion (SWAPI) spaceflight science instrument for NASA’s Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe (IMAP - https://imap.princeton.edu/), which is scheduled to launch 2025.

 

The candidate will become part of the team of highly experienced scientists and engineers who are working to design and deliver the SWAPI spaceflight science instrument.

 

This is a four-year term position.



The candidate will:

  • work with scientists and engineers across technical boundaries to optimize instrument performance
  • refine the instrument concept as required by analysis and testing
  • prototype detectors and electronics in laboratory vacuum systems using ion beams
  • travel to the facilities of other team members to participate in design meetings
  • write requirement and specification documents
  • design flight electronics to meet high-reliability requirements that are necessary for NASA missions
  • analyze analog and digital circuits for expected and worst-case performance
  • provide inputs to thermal and structural analysts
  • perform parts stress derating analysis to ensure high reliability
  • troubleshoot engineering hardware in cooperation with software engineers
  • write procedures and conduct comprehensive hardware verification tests
  • deliver presentations to NASA representatives in formal design reviews
  • provide support for instrument qualification tests and calibration, including field tests at customer facilities (NASA centers, government labs)
  • participate in commissioning and operation of science instrument after it has been launched into space.


Candidates must have a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, or a closely related field.
A strong background in analog design and analysis skills and a good digital design background is required.
