JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:


We are searching for an Electrical Engineer to join our Electro-Optics & Electronics Division of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University, located in Freeport PA. This division is focused on supporting projects related to imaging and laser system development, prototyping, test and evaluation.  ARL’s purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC).

Responsibilities include:

  • Contribute to technical efforts in the development of a broad range of novel electro-optical systems
  • Contribute to desk/bench-top development, maturing technologies through field-testable prototypes and transitioning them into field-deployable products
  • Support operationalization of techniques through data analysis, lab experimentation and field-testing activities
  • Document you work through written reports, contribute to preparation of papers and presentations, attend and present research at relevant technical conferences, and network with colleagues and customer base

Higher-level responsibilities include:

  • Independently contribute to multiple and/or large electrical and electro-optics projects
  • Provide technical leadership for electrical and electro-optics programs and initiatives
  • Brief senior leadership and sponsors
  • Develop relationships at technical conferences/meetings; participate in external seminars, workshops, professional societies and committees

This position will be filled as a Level 1 or 2 Research and Development Engineer depending upon the successful candidate’s education and experience. Minimally requires a Bachelors' degree in an engineering or science discipline for a Level 1. A degree in Electrical Engineering, Imaging Sciences, or Physics is preferred. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level positions

Required skills and experience include:

  • Exposure to development of imaging sensor or laser-based electro-optical systems
  • Background and experience with electrical/electronic design
  • Some background and experience with imaging, photonics and optics techniques
  • Familiarity with systems engineering principles
  • Eligibility for a Secret security clearance

Preferred skills and experience includes:

  • A Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Imaging Sciences, or Physics or a related field
  • Experience with electrical design, fabrication, integration, and evaluation experience of electro-optical systems for military or intelligence community customers
  • Experience with systems engineering processes, breaking-down high level system requirements into its components
  • Drafting of technical reports
  • An active Secret security clearance with eligibility for TS/SCI
