Job Summary

  • Perform electrical design of projects including lighting, motor control, electrical circuitry, special systems (fire alarm, security, and both low and high voltage power distribution).
  • Engineering support to Planning Department architects, designers, shops, architects and contractors during all project phases of planning, design, plan review and construction.
  • Ensure project quality control and adherence to plans and specifications.
  • Qualify products and product vendors for inclusion with campus projects.
  • Project management for campus electrical projects.
  • This position requires working in an office environment. Working from home on a permanent or semi-permanent basis is not permitted.

Essential Functions

Ensures the electrical designs developed are accurate and meet the needs of the University (75%)

  • Translates needs into working design documents.
  • Completes Cost Estimates for required projects.
  • Writes electrical specifications for campus projects.
  • Coordinates and designs electrical components of projects.
  • Assists Electrical Shop with electrical engineering problems.
  • Meets and provides electrical support to Planning Department.
  • Designs electrical engineering projects of a wide variety (e.g. high voltage power, secondary voltage power, clocks, fire alarm and security, lighting, etc.)
  • Oversees campus interior and exterior lighting needs.
  • Maintain campus CNA database for lighting, electrical equipment, and fire alarm systems.
  • Supports activities of other University departments.

Review designs from outside consultants to ensure that the University needs are met (10%)

  • Review outside consultants' designs.
  • Assists outside consultants in making decision regarding designs that are beneficial to the University.

Maintains excellent quality workmanship and compliance to plans, specifications and codes (10%)

  • Performs special inspection assignments.
  • Inspects electrical installations.
  • Formulates decision and recommendations to solve major and minor problems.
  • Works with construction coordinators on electrical aspects of a project to ensure contract documents are followed.

Assists in project control, coordination and facilitates communication (5%)

  • Coordinate project details with contractors, architects, engineers, Provo City Power, and the University.

Assumes responsibility for University citizenship

  • Promotes a positive image of the Department and the University.
  • Relates well with other University employees.
  • Adheres to University standards and policies.

 

Education/Experience

Minimum education/experience required:  

Level 54: Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering and 3+ years Electrical Engineering experience including Lighting and Power Distribution. Must have the ability to obtain a Professional Engineering P.E. license within four years.

Preferred:

Level 55: Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering and 5+ years Electrical Engineering experience including Lighting and Power Distribution plus a P.E. License.

Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications:

  • Broad experience in construction methods and procedures
  • In-depth comprehension of National Electrical Code, ADA applicability affecting facility planning and IES illumination standards
  • Must have the ability to work with a variety of individuals in a coordinating function while subjected to other perspectives and opinions
  • Experience in electrical design with commensurate CAD and REVIT skills
  • Extensive lighting design in wide range of challenging applications
  • Extensive medium and voltage design (12KV to 47KV)
