Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) seeks an Electrical Engineer to support hands-on learning activities at the SEAS Active Learning Labs. In this exciting and unique position, you will use your knowledge, skills and ideas to help develop and implement current and new course lab components, train students and teaching fellows in design, laboratory, and manufacturing practices, and provide support for students’ design projects. Reporting to the Director for Active Learning, Electrical Engineering, you will be part of an enthusiastic and dedicated team of staff engineers who support SEAS educational mission. Job-Specific Responsibilities

  • Ensure a welcoming and inclusive lab environment for all students, staff, and faculty.
  • Support the lab components of SEAS engineering courses, primarily electrical engineering courses.
  • Engage with faculty and students to support course-based lab activities and design projects as well as individual and group student capstone projects.
  • Partner and collaborate with SEAS faculty and teaching staff to design, create, develop, and implement new laboratory activities for courses.
  • Support the development and instruction of technical hands-on workshops and activities on electrical engineering topics during the fall and spring semesters, as well as for special programs and summer activities.
  • Assist in the development and updating of Standard Operating Procedures for lab equipment.
  • Train students and course teaching fellows on the use and application of electrical engineering lab equipment.
  • Support the development of engineering prototypes that serve as resources and tools for active learning.
  • Set up, test, and prepare equipment prior to upcoming lab experiments and activities.
  • Troubleshoot and support student work during lab experiments and activities.
  • Provide support to summer outreach program(s) through activities such as curriculum design, lab setup, scheduling, and space planning logistics.
  • Provide regular updates and summaries of work to the Electrical Engineering Learning Lab director and senior engineering staff.
  • Assist in maintaining inventory of lab equipment and supplies. Organize and replenish supplies when needed.
  • Lead lab safety trainings and orientations for students as well as course teaching fellows and assistants for use of Electrical Engineering Active Learning Labs. Support related efforts in the compliance and implementation of safety protocols in the electrical engineering labs.
  • Prepare and maintain lab facilities for audits, inspections, and tours.
  • Support other operations and daily activities of the electrical engineering labs.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Two or more years of work experience in electrical engineering or a related field. Internships, co-ops or paid positions in the field of electrical engineering may count towards years of experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Specialization in one or more of the following areas is strongly preferred: RF and communication system design, IC/VLSI/SoC design, electronics, signal processing, instrumentation, control systems, robotics.
  • Familiar with some of the following: C/C++, Arduino, Python, MATLAB, PCB design, SPICE, Oscilloscopes and other benchtop equipment, microcontroller development boards, serial communication interfaces, and soldering.
  • Experience working in an active learning environment is a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability and willingness to juggle multiple projects, creativity in problem solving, and high self-motivation are key to performing effectively in this position.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. In particular, competence in generating straightforward technical documentation such as lab procedures, protocols, and reports.
  • Enthusiasm for supporting open-ended interdisciplinary engineering design projects
  • Ability to perform effectively as part of a team and in a highly self-directed environment is essential. 
  • The engineer should have a strong interest in working with members of our lab to create an inclusive and highly collaborative work environment for diverse groups of students, teaching fellows, teaching staff, and faculty.

Physical Requirements

The ability to lift 25-50 lbs and be on your feet for extended periods is important to complete the duties of this position.


Working Conditions

This work is performed in a laboratory and office environment.
