Job Description

Facilities Management seeks an Electrical Engineer to perform professional electrical engineering duties, such as design and analysis of building electrical distribution systems, power distribution systems, lighting systems, and related controls for a variety of engineering functions, including campus electrical distribution system engineering and renovation construction designs.

Essential Duties

Develops electrical plans for renovations within University owned/leased buildings and other projects; designs and/or supervises the design of a variety of electrical systems; reviews and evaluates electrical construction design drawings and specifications prepared by staff and consulting engineers; supervises professional personnel in preparing electrical plans, writing specifications, and evaluating materials for construction; prepares special reports on construction, maintenance, and electrical problems; provides direction and engineering support for decisions related to campus electrical distribution systems, supports Facilities Management personnel and contractors in the daily operation of campus electrical systems, responds to unplanned outages and advises on scenarios to restore service, works closely with local electrical utility providers, provides engineering guidance for solar power installations and other renewable technologies, coordinates with outside entities and key stakeholders in ASU’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality, reviews and evaluates standard specifications and details used in other jurisdictions for possible adoption by the University; consults with and advises inspectors regarding electrical problems encountered during construction of major projects; attends final inspections and recommends acceptance or rejection of completed work; administers consulting contracts for design and construction management of electrical engineering projects by coordinating the work of the consultant and University staff; gives technical advice to management and staff; formulates standard specification language for electrical construction projects; represents the University on panels and boards as needed; demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service. 

 DAYS AND SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday 8:00AM-5:00PM


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field AND five (5) years of Electrical Engineering or related experience as it pertains to construction; OR Nine (9) years of Electrical Engineering or related experience as it pertains to construction; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Employee must possess a valid US Driver's license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment. Possession of, or ability to obtain within six months, a certificate of registration as a professional engineer with proficiency in Electrical Engineering with registration in the state of Arizona.  Employee must possess a valid US Drivers license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.


Desired Qualifications

Evidence of a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field. 

Experience in:

  • renovation design; 
  • analyzing and designing building electrical systems and campus power distribution systems; 
  • AutoCAD and SKM. 

Evidence of effective communication skills


Working Environment

May be exposed to hazardous and dangerous materials, tools, and equipment which will require safety precautions and/or specific process to be followed, and may include the use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) (e.g. safety glasses, hearing protection, negative pressure and positive pressure respirator).  Use of PPE may require medical clearance prior to use.   May access various construction sites and campus tunnels which may involve stooping, walking on uneven surfaces, kneeling, climbing stairs, ladders and scaffolding, standing and walking in extreme temperatures.  Lifts, bends and carries objects up to 30 pounds. Drives university vehicles.  Clearly communicate to perform essential functions of the job.

This position is located at the University Services Building, 1551 S. Rural Road, Tempe, AZ (on Rural Road south of Apache Blvd). 

Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license (minimum of Class D) upon employment and maintain throughout employment.  Post-offer of employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39 month period from date of hire.

This position may be called in for emergency response including nights, weekends, and holidays.
