Electrical Compliance Engineer

Berkeley Lab’s Facilities Division is looking for an Electrical Compliance Engineer to join their Engineering Team!

 

In this role, you will work in partnership with electrical engineers, construction subcontractors, field inspectors and customers in day-to-day operations ensuring the reliability of the plant electrical systems. This will include verifying system compliance with codes and standards; and introducing new assessment technologies to deepen our understanding of electrical safety, resilience and reliability. Reporting to the Building Safety and Code Compliance Manager, you will collaborate with Electrical Inspectors to facilitate field validation of equipment and system installations as part of the Electrical Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) program.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) to ensure uniformity of compliance with Lab policies, procedures and standards in the review, evaluation and enforcement of electrical and fire safety codes, industry standards, DOE Orders, and other safety-related procedures. 
  • Perform plan check and design review on electrical drawings/specifications prior to acceptance of construction documents.
  • Work effectively to build cooperative relationships to ensure compliance while maintaining alignment with the Lab’s mission to make significant investments to repair, maintain, and upgrade existing infrastructure and buildings.
  • Provide clarification and supporting documentation to assist in the timely resolution of design review and inspection comments.
  • Provide investigation, research and engineering direction as to code and specification compliance when requested.
  • Review energization plans, Electrical Validation and Authorization Package (EVAP) submittals, Methods of Procedure (MOP), and Test and Inspection Reports prior to energization. 
  • Develop Inspection Matrices for electrical installation inspections, electrical testing requirements and energization procedures for the safe installation and operation of equipment. 
  • Use computer software to conduct collaborative design reviews, develop presentations and communications, and maintain pertinent files for archiving and retrieval.

 

What Is Required:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Electrical Engineering (or a closely related discipline) and a minimum of 5 years of directly relevant experience performing electrical design, conducting technical plan reviews, and/or electrical inspection for fire or building code regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience in the principles and applications of National Electric Code and Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace (NFPA 70 & NFPA 70E).
  • Knowledge of applicable industry and regulatory standards, safety codes, design standards and environmental regulations pertinent to the electrical engineering discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in the design of electrical systems, plan review and field evaluation of electrical installations for code and standards compliance of office buildings, research laboratories, building utility centers, and medium & low voltage power distribution systems.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with computers, proficient with software applications related to engineering and design tasks, design review, document management, and project scheduling.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills including experience working across organizational and institutional boundaries effectively on multiple projects with varying priorities while meeting tight deadlines.
  • Ability to climb ladders and perform site walk-thru, at times around hazardous systems and equipment, to investigate as built conditions for the design documents and to inspect equipment, systems, and structures.
  • Flexibility to work early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays in accordance with the planned work schedule.

 

What We Prefer:

  • Registration as a Professional Electrical Engineer in the State of California.
  • Knowledgeable on the review, evaluation and enforcement of electrical and fire safety codes related to Department of Energy (DOE) Orders.
  • International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI) / International Code Council (ICC) Building Plans Examiner Certification.
  • Ability to achieve and maintain an IAEI/ICC Commercial Electrical Inspector E2 Certificate (required within 6 months of date of hire).
  • Ability to achieve and maintain an IAEI/ICC Electrical Plans Examiner E3 Certificate (within 12 months of date of hire).
