About the Department
The Environmental Health and Safety Center staff provides consultative and technical support, training and direction for regulatory compliance and effective program development to University faculty, staff, students and visitors.
The Biological Safety Section provides safety services to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control biosafety related concerns that include the following: exposure and accident investigation and reporting, maintaining biohazard agent and equipment inventories, autoclave safety, decontamination and biowaste treatment validation, risk assessment for research laboratory, animal, plant, arthropod and clinical processes, implementing the university blood-borne pathogens program, facility verification, inspection, training and drills for high level biohazard laboratories and more.
University Inspection Team (UNIT): The Laboratory Inspection Program aims to enhance safety by identifying and minimizing hazards in labs, ensuring compliance with regulations and University standards. UNIT conducts inspections to verify lab personnel’s compliance with training requirements, proper use of engineering and administrative controls, adherence to work practices, utilization of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment, effective management of hazardous chemicals, and understanding of emergency procedures. Additionally, UNIT collaborates with lab personnel to address specific hazards, fostering a hazard-free work environment.
Essential Job Duties
Join Our Team as an EH&S Specialist!
Are you passionate about promoting safety and compliance within a dynamic organization? We’re seeking a dedicated individual to join our EH&S Department as an EH&S Specialist. In this role, you’ll play a pivotal part in supporting various sections of our organization, with a primary focus on assisting our Biosafety Officer.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Supporting Biosafety Programs: Manage the University Bloodborne Pathogens program, provide technical expertise to the inspection team, and assist the Biosafety Committee.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Interpret and administer federal permits (CDC and USDA), state laws (NC), and technical guidelines, ensuring adherence to biosafety protocols.
  • Program Monitoring: Conduct lab safety inspections, maintain records, and coordinate facilities inspections to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Training and Education: Develop and deliver training programs, oversee BBP training, and create educational materials for campus constituents.
  • Effective Communication: Communicate complex regulatory information effectively and contribute to annual reports and assessments.

Additional Responsibilities:
  • Perform inspections in challenging locations.
  • Participate in campus outreach activities.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in a Physical Science, Biological Science, Environmental Science/Engineering, Occupational Safety, Industrial Technology or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require additional training, certifications, or licensure. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Other Required Qualifications
Technical Skills:
  • The ability to develop and deliver accurate, clear, and complete technical reports.
  • Providing recommendations in support of programs based on technical expertise.
  • Basic knowledge of applicable local, state, federal, and funding agency requirements associated with biosafety.

Communication Skills:
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Interface effectively with investigators on resolution of concerns related to biohazardous agents.
  • Conveying modes of transmission and hazard categories clearly and effectively.

Physical Requirements:
  • Assisting with emergency response and carrying response equipment over 30 lbs.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety, including biosafety cabinet operation and personal protective equipment.
  • Physical ability for frequent walking inspections, bending, squatting, reaching, and occasional climbing for rooftop surveys and heavy lifting tasks.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience applying biosafety and containment principles
  • Focused course work in Genetics, Epidemiology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology

Required License(s) or Certification(s)
  • A valid North Carolina driver’s license is required, if you don’t have a valid North Carolina driver’s license then you must be able to obtain one within 90 days of your hire date.
  • Documented Security Risk Assessment (SRA) approval or ability to obtain SRA approval for access to select agents required.
