About the Department | The Environmental Health and Safety Center staff provides consultative and technical support, training and direction for regulatory compliance and effective program development to University faculty, staff, students and visitors. The Biological Safety Section provides safety services to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control biosafety related concerns that include the following: exposure and accident investigation and reporting, maintaining biohazard agent and equipment inventories, autoclave safety, decontamination and biowaste treatment validation, risk assessment for research laboratory, animal, plant, arthropod and clinical processes, implementing the university blood-borne pathogens program, facility verification, inspection, training and drills for high level biohazard laboratories and more. University Inspection Team (UNIT): The Laboratory Inspection Program aims to enhance safety by identifying and minimizing hazards in labs, ensuring compliance with regulations and University standards. UNIT conducts inspections to verify lab personnel’s compliance with training requirements, proper use of engineering and administrative controls, adherence to work practices, utilization of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment, effective management of hazardous chemicals, and understanding of emergency procedures. Additionally, UNIT collaborates with lab personnel to address specific hazards, fostering a hazard-free work environment. |

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience | Bachelor’s degree in a Physical Science, Biological Science, Environmental Science/Engineering, Occupational Safety, Industrial Technology or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require additional training, certifications, or licensure. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
