Educator, Middle/High School

The DNA Learning Center (DNALC) of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory has an immediate full-time educator position available as we expand operations into metropolitan New Jersey. The full-time positions will be at the new DNALC at the Passaic County Biotech Innovation Center in Wayne, NJ.  Due to open in 2024, the new center is on the campus of Passaic County Technical Institute and adjoining a campus of Passaic County Community College. The 6,500 square foot facility will have two teaching labs, a research lab, and a computer classroom.

Responsibilities will include:
– providing hands-on genetics and molecular biology instruction to precollege students visiting the DNALC for academic year field trips, summer camps, and extended research projects;
– delivering in-school instruction;
– training and managing high school interns;
– assisting with student research programs;
– conducting teacher training;
– developing teaching modules.
 
Selected candidates will become members of a small, influential group recognized worldwide as a leader in creating and disseminating new methods in genetics education, including the fields of genomics, bioinformatics, and data science. Strong candidates will have formal education in the biological sciences and backgrounds in research and/or teaching. Recent PhD graduates and postdoctoral scientists who would like to pursue teaching careers are encouraged to apply - especially those with experience in Next Generation Sequencing or metabarcoding. The position demands a motivated self-starter who can work independently and as part of a team, with excellent writing, computer, and communication skills.
 
 Flexible scheduling will require some weekend work. Training, in advance of opening the Passaic facility, will take place at DNALC locations in Sleepy Hollow, Brooklyn, and/or Cold Spring Harbor. Flexible scheduling will require occasional teaching at the Brooklyn or Sleepy Hollow facility.
Education Required: Undergraduate Degree

The salary range for this role is $54,000-80,000.  The salary range or hourly rate listed is a good faith determination of potential base compensation that may be offered to a successful applicant for this position at the time of this job advertisement and may be modified in the future.
