The Educational Technology Team Lead supervises and manages the KU IT Educational Technology staff team housed in multiple locations, setting the direction for the support and services for this team including exploring, identifying, evaluating and promoting existing and emerging instructional technologies and their application. This person will guide and mentor a team of Educational Technology Support specialist, including coordination and prioritization of assignments and workloads. As direct supervisor of this team, this position also provides input for goals, team vision, and coaching to the other members of the Educational Technology staff. This position is given considerable latitude and independence to organizing projects, resources, and activities in a robust, fast paced and evolving technical environment.
This position also directly supports faculty, staff, and students in the use to teaching and learning tools in the KU environment, including Blackboard, SoftChalk, Respondus, VoiceThread, and others. This position is responsible for identifying training needs by performing interviews, surveys, and other consultations with IT leadership, university management and academic stakeholders, and then developing and delivering workshop programs and materials, support documentation, and deskside coaching in support of the Learning Management System (LMS), educational technology tools, and other academic related services offered to faculty, staff, and students by the KU Information Technology (IT) Department. This position will work closely with the Application Support & Instruction Assistant Director, other Educational Technologists, KU IT Directors and managers, key IT staff and departments including Media Production Studio and Classroom Technology, and partners in the KU Center for Online and Distance Learning and the Center for Teaching Excellence, the Academic Systems Steering Committee. This position will also work with the Technology Instruction and Engagement team and may be included in outreach and presentations at University events, including First Year Experience, New Faculty Orientation, Graduate Student orientations and similar programs. The successful candidate will have a great customer service ethic, effective interpersonal and time management skills, strong leadership and listening skills, good oral and written communication skills, the ability to provide effective feedback in a professional manner, and a positive attitude.
20%- Supervises and evaluates all Educational Technologists and student workers (Educational Technology staff). This includes training and mentoring of staff, along with compiling and maintaining a training manual and online training resources. Evaluation of staff includes development of goals and tracking goal progress. Additionally manages leave requests, approves time sheets, allocates staff resources, and keeps Application Support and Instruction Manager apprised. Manages the Educational Technology staff workload, prioritizing team assignments, delegating projects, and coordinating staff meetings. Leads the Educational Technology staff in developing their professional contact list by collaborating with peer universities to compare and learn new techniques.
Ensures KU IT Educational Technology staff team is providing appropriate level of support by managing various support queues, and providing resources to the team as needed. Coordinates and serves in technical service meetings to provide input about the management of the academic applications including the learning management system, and works with appropriate staff to develop campus communications and announcements about changes or outages of the system.
20%- Provides daily support of KUs academic applications and integrated tools to faculty, staff, and students through educational workshops, by phone, and in person with deskside coaching. Collaborate with faculty in numerous ways on course development projects in order to promote and educate how to effectively use educational technology tools available at The University of Kansas. Assists team with testing for upgrades and patches. In addition to daily support, this position also serves as Tier2 educational technology support for escalated phone calls, emails, or tickets as needed.
15%- Provide leadership by keeping abreast of new technologies and how they will impact teaching and learning and advocate effectively for their use. Researches and demonstrates best practices, helpful tips and hints, and develop use case examples for possible new services and tools. Develop documentation and communications and announcements as needed. Collaborate with leadership in external units regarding the evaluation of current tools for feedback and guidance for recommendations of offerings or adoption of new tools and the potential retirement of old tools.
15%- Attend and participate in project and planning meetings to represent the scope of teaching and learning technologies at KU. Will prioritize and delegate to the Educational Technology staff as needed. Works closely with the IT development team, and IT QA team, and the IT application administration team. This position and the Educational Technology team also provide coordination of and assistance in testing upgrades and patches. Additionally is a key member of the campus Academic Systems Steering Committee, and works directly with the Chair of the committee and the Application Support and Instruction Assistant Director to provide monthly agenda, status reports, and other information.
15%- Serve as the first point of contact and communicate appropriately with parties looking for information about KU’s academic learning systems, educational technology tools, and Educational Technology staff. Manage the educational technology service tool portfolio, including license and usage tracking, and develop metrics from measuring the success and usage of services and team performance. Participate in professional development and training to better facilitate KU’s LMS and Educational Technology tools.
10%- Manage, coordinate and plan a recurring curriculum that includes all educational technology tools used at KU. Utilize instructional design principles to develop and deliver workshops and develop course materials that provide faculty support in teaching and learning initiatives. Investigate and determine appropriate training methods from a variety of options including instructor-led (both classroom and remotely), web-based (online), and pre-recorded training. Assure workshop and course materials are appropriately documented. Periodically evaluate the effectiveness of workshops and learning outcomes. Ensures KU IT Educational Technology staff team is also developing and delivering quality, effective training. Plans customized workshops as needed, sometimes in collaboration with multiple departments.
